Bacteriophage lytic patterns for identification of salmonellae, shigellae, Escherichia coli, Citrobacter freundii, and Enterobacter cloacae

Abstract: Citrobacterfreundii (4t19, +Ill, and 4AII)) Enterobacter cloacae (Ent), and Shigella spp. (Sh) have been isolated from hospital sewage. These bacteriophages, in combination with Felix SalmoneUa phage 0-I, were used as a diagnostic phage typing set which included seven phage preparations: 0-I, C (+I and +III), Sh, E (E-1 and E-2), CE (+II and E-3), E-4, and Ent. After 20,280 cultures of 27 species and 9 biogroups of 15 genera of the family Enterobacteriaceae and 276 cultures of 8 species of 6 genera outside the… Show more

“…Numerous phages infectious to E. cloacae have been screened to construct phage-typing sets for identifying clinical strains (Gaston 1987;Daw et al 1992;He and Pan 1992). Loessner et al (1993) carried out morphological and molecular characterization of the phages and classified them into some morphotypes belonging to the families Podoviridae, Siphoviridae and Myoviridae.…”

“…In medical fields, virulent bacteriophages (phages) active against E. cloacae have been screened with the aim of constructing phage-typing sets for detecting Enterobacter strains in infected patients or contaminated pasteurized dairy products (Gaston 1987;Daw et al 1992;He and Pan 1992;Loessner et al 1993). We also focused on the highly specific recognition of host bacterial cells by virulent phages and subsequent rapid lysis of infected cells.…”

“…However, relatively few candidate phages that lyse C. freundii strains have been properly characterized. In early 1992, the C. freundii phages phiI, phiII, and phiIII isolated in China were considered for use in public hygiene and clinical laboratories as a phage typing method for bacteriological identification; phiI lysed 50.4% of the 3,222 C. freundii cultures that were tested, while phiII and phiIII lysed 10.6% and 29.9% of these cultures, respectively [He and Pan, ]. However, no further detailed characterization of the three phages could be found in the available literature.…”
