The present study aimed to isolate and characterize the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from the intestine of snakehead (Channa striatus) fingerling to be used as a new probiotic in aquaculture. The total colony count of bacteria in the fish intestine was 2.1 × 10 6 cfu/g. Five LAB were isolated from the intestine of twenty fish and one of these isolates, LAB-4 was identified as Enterococcus faecalis by conventional and molecular techniques. Probiotic properties showed that this LAB could grow from pH 3 to 8, but the best growth was observed at pH 7. E. faecalis grew at 0.15 and 0.3% bile salt concentrations, from 15to 45°C and at 4% NaCl in de Man Rogosa and Sharp (MRS) broth. This bacterium showed in vitro inhibitory activity against three fish pathogens viz., Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Shewanella putrefaciens. Antibiotic sensitivity tests indicated that E. faecalis was resistant instantly to: streptomycin, gentamycin and kanamycin, intermediate to tetracycline, and sensitive to chloramphenicol, amoxicillin and ampicillin antibiotics. Moreover, significantly (P<0.05) improved survival of fish was observed when fed with E. faecalis-fortified diet in an in vivo challenge test using A. hydrophila. Based on the results, it can be concluded that E. faecalis is a promising probiotic for snakehead fish against pathogenic infestation.

Probiotics renowned as valuable microbes serve as a potential alternative to control diseases in aquaculture and are considered as an efficient and environment-friendly approach to reduce the use of antibiotics. The present study aims at the isolation of putative probiotic bacteria from the intestinal tract of different fish species from the Doaba region of Punjab, India. In this study, isolated bacterial strains were characterized based on their morphological, biochemical and molecular characterization by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, followed by in vitro evaluation of different selection parameters described in FAO/WHO guidelines. A total of 169 different bacterial strains were isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of 52 different fish species. After in vitro evaluation, out of 169 bacterial strains only five bacteria (S3, S7, BDK2', BDK7 and BDK9) identified as Enterococcus and Bacillus species showed antagonistic activity against the fish pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC 4 673). These isolates were screened based on their response towards bile tolerance, pH tolerance, adhesion and drug susceptibility to different antibiotic discs. And, the in vivo results indicated improved growth and survival against the infection (P. aeruginosa) after oral administration of the probiotics. The observations of in vitro and in vivo evaluation indicatethat these isolated probiotic strains serve as effective probiotics and can be used as a novel and safe treatment to cure current issues in aquaculture. This study was conducted to assess the effect of gamma irradiation on microbiological and protein quality of dried prawns during long‐term storage. For this purpose, different microbial counts and total protein contents of nonirradiated and irradiated (0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 kGy) dried prawns at different stages of storage period were analyzed. Microbiological analysis indicated that irradiation had significant effect (P < 0.05) at reducing microbial count. Irradiation dose of 5.0 and 7.5 kGy were required for total elimination of total fungal count and total bacterial count, respectively. Total protein content was reduced significantly (P < 0.05) by gamma radiation. Seventy‐eight bacterial isolates belonging to 10 species were identified from the untreated samples. Finally, gamma irradiation improved the microbiological quality of dried prawns and can be used for long‐term preservation of the food item. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The present study revealed that gamma irradiation improved the microbiological quality of dried prawns and can be used for long‐term preservation of the food item. The findings of this study can help to promote the implementation of gamma radiation for other dried fish for preservation.
