Bacterial nanocellulose production and application: a 10-year overview

Abstract: Production of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is becoming increasingly popular owing to its environmentally friendly properties. Based on this benefit of BNC production, researchers have also begun to examine the capacity for cellulose production through microbial hosts. Indeed, several research groups have developed processes for BNC production, and many studies have been published to date, with the goal of developing methods for large-scale production. During BNC bioproduction, the culture medium represents ap… Show more

“…They are also known to cause the formation of sulfate ester groups at the surface of nanometric cellulose . Production of bacterial nanocellulose is becoming increasingly popular, but at the same time is still costly and problematic . Hence, the bioconversion of cellulose with enzymes could be a worth considering alternative.…”

“…BNC as a new material is considered as a new solution to unsolved problems . Many excellent review articles regarding BNC have been published and the amount of scientific literature is growing exponentially . In the following sections, selected current and forward‐looking hot topics of BNC research, development and applications are discussed in more detail, including the production of BNC and the scale‐up, product design and structural characterization.…”

“…Nata is a fermentation product of the bacteria, Acetobacter xylinum. Referred to as Nata de coco and Nata de pina, their flavors are controlled by the coconut water-based and pineapple water-based culture mediums, respectively (Shi et al 2014;Jozala et al 2016). Figures 4 and 5 provide schematic representations of the production process for Nata de coco and Nata de pina, respectively.…”
