Bacterial isolates and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns among patients with pus and/or wound discharge at Gondar university hospital

Abstract: BackgroundIn spite of advances in control of infections, wound infections have not completely controlled due to many reasons. The widespread uses of antibiotics, together with the length of time over which they have been available have led to major problems of resistant organisms contributing to morbidity and mortality. This study was aimed to assess bacterial isolates and their drug susceptibility patterns from patients with pus and/or wound discharge.MethodsA retrospective study was conducted at Gondar Unive… Show more

“…S. aureus was highly susceptible to vancomycin (100%), linezolid (100%), imipenem (89%), and meropenem (84%) while it showed resistance to ampicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, ciprofloxacin, and azithromycin. Unlike some reports in which MRSA was associated with wound infections [16, 17], our findings revealed susceptibility in S. aureus isolates towards cloxacillin and cephalosporins. P. mirabilis and Streptococcus isolates, however, exhibited minimal resistance and were susceptible to most of the antibiotics (Table 1).…”

“…In the breakdown of bacterial pathogens isolated, S.aureus isolates predominates, followed by E.coli, and Citrobacterspp, which is contrary to the pattern reported in some studies and varies with the frequency of isolation [12][13][14], but similar result was revealed by [15].…”

“…Since these infections are associated with high morbidity prompt antibiotic therapy is mandatory. An increase incidence of multidrug resistant Gram negative bacteria and Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus is frequently isolated from pyogenic infections under hospital settings (Muluye et al, 2014;Trojan et al, 2016). The emergence of antibiotic resistant pathogens poses a grave threat to the health care system.…”
