Bacillus plakortidis sp. nov. and Bacillus murimartini sp. nov., novel alkalitolerant members of rRNA group 6

Abstract: The Gram-positive, alkali- and salt-tolerant marine bacterium strain P203T is described together with its closest phylogenetic neighbour, terrestrial isolate LMG 21005T. Strain P203T was isolated from material from the sponge Plakortis simplex that was obtained from the Sula-Ridge, Norwegian Sea. Strain LMG 21005T was an undescribed strain that was isolated from a church wall mural in Germany. Strains P203T and LMG 21005T were identified as novel alkalitolerant members of the Bacillus rRNA group 6 with a 16S r… Show more

“…Species of genus Bacillus are known for their capacity to produce an array of antimicrobial substances and extracellular enzymes, which may altogether facilitate substrate utilization and displacement of competitors. Interestingly, among the main OTUs detected for endosporeformers were B. firmus and Bacillus plakortidis, both of them alkali-tolerant bacteria that have also been isolated from seawater environments (Borchert et al, 2007;Geng et al, 2014). The tropical coast of Southern Spain is known for the intensive farming of cherimoya trees.…”

“…The type strain LMG 21005 T of Bacillus murimartini was isolated from a church wall mural in Germany and identified as a novel alkalitolerant member of the Bacillus rRNA group 6 ( 1 ). B. murimartini LMG 21005 T showed 98.8% similarity with the closest described neighbor, Bacillus gibsonii DSM 8722 T ( 2 ).…”

“…B. murimartini LMG 21005 T showed 98.8% similarity with the closest described neighbor, Bacillus gibsonii DSM 8722 T ( 2 ). The optimal growth of B. murimartini LMG 21005 T was achieved at 15°C to 20°C and pH 8.5; it was not salt tolerant (up to 4% NaCl) ( 1 ). Notably, there is no other information about B. murimartini except its taxonomical description so far.…”
