Bacillus hwajinpoensis sp. nov. and an unnamed Bacillus genomospecies, novel members of Bacillus rRNA group 6 isolated from sea water of the East Sea and the Yellow Sea in Korea

Abstract: Two Gram-positive or -variable, endospore-forming, slightly halophilic strains (SW-72T and SW-93) were isolated from sea water of the East Sea and the Yellow Sea in Korea, respectively, and subjected to polyphasic taxonomic study. Both strains had cell-wall peptidoglycan that was based on meso-diaminopimelic acid and MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone. The two strains contained large amounts of saturated and branched fatty acids, with anteiso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acid. The DNA G+C contents of strains SW… Show more

“…According to previous studies on type strains in phylogenetic trees, most were isolated from marine or highly saline environments [8,[21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. However, our sampling was performed one week after typhoon extinction, and no severe waves or sea fog were reported.…”

“…Both strains were negative for the following: production of indole and acetoin; hydrolysis of agar, starch, urea, Tweens 20, 40 and 80 and chitin; acid production from L-arabinose, melibiose, L-rhamnose, D-xylose, adonitol, dulcitol, inositol, sorbitol and citrate; and utilization of L-arabinose, D-lactose, inositol and sorbitol a Data from Heyrman et al (2003) and this study b E Ellipsoidal, S Spherical, C Central, ST Subterminal c ? positive reaction; -negative reaction relatives of the genus Bacillus (Heyrman et al 2003;Ivanova et al 2004;Lim et al 2006;Yoon et al 2004). However, the novel strain can clearly be distinguished from its nearest neighbor, B. decolorationis LMG 19507 T , on the basis of some differences in the polar lipid and fatty acid composition ( Fig.…”

“…The majority of members of the genus were isolated from soil samples but the type strains of only thirteen species, including B. algicola, B. alveayuensis, B. aquimaris, B. chungangensis, B. coahuilensis, B. galliciensis, B. hwajinpoensis, B. litoralis, B. marisflavi, B. neizhouensis, B. oceanisediminis, B. plakortidis and B. qingdaonensis, have so far been recovered from different marine environments (Bae et al 2005;Balcázar et al 2010;Borchert et al 2007;Cerritos et al 2008;Chen et al 2009;Cho et al 2010;Ivanova et al 2004;Wang et al 2007;Yoon et al 2003Yoon et al , 2004Yoon et al , 2005Zhang et al 2010). It is interesting that all reported marine Bacillus species are characterized by an aerobic type of metabolism.…”
