Veteran Competencies in Nursing Textbooks: Implications for Educators

The aim of this study was to examine the adequacy of military/veteran-related content in nursing textbooks used in prelicensure programs. BACKGROUND With increased numbers of veterans receiving care in civilian settings, nurses may lack essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes outlined in competencies required to provide culturally sensitive veteran-centered care. One explanation for this may be inadequate preparation during prelicensure nursing education. METHOD A quantitative, descriptive study guided the analysis and rating of 32 key words in 24 textbooks across eight content areas. RESULTS Key words were included in most textbooks but frequently not connected to military service or veterans. The key word with the highest mean rating was posttraumatic stress disorder; the highest rated content area was psychiatric/mental health. CONCLUSION With limited textbook resources, nurse faculty must engage in deliberate efforts to include veteran content in nursing curricula. As competency-based education trends evolve, these findings are relevant and should be considered in curricular design and revision.KEY WORDS Cultural Competency -Military Personnel -Nursing Education -Nursing Education Research -Veterans V eteran-centered health care is an ongoing public health concern in the United States, resulting from nearly two decades of deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and other less publicized locations. Over 18 million people in the United States are military veterans (US Department of Veterans Affairs [VA], 2019), constituting about 7.6 percent of the population (Schultz, 2017). Historically, military service members who sustained serious physical injury during war often did not survive, so their long-term care needs were not as apparent as they are for post-9/11 veterans (Baker, 2014;Geiling et al., 2012). With the passing of the VA MISSION Act in 2018, more veterans will seek care in their communities, outside VA hospitals and clinics (US Department of VA, 2019). Nurses and health care providers must be prepared to meet their needs. Work rotation is an employment activity related to the process of transferring functions, responsibilities, and employee status, to obtain work satisfaction and increase maximum work performance. Work rotation functions for the development of human resources which are believed to provide many benefits to the organization. This study aims to determine organizational considerations in implementing employee work rotation activities so that a model will be created that will be used as the basis for employee rotation. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods, data analysis was carried out, using four stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions or verification. Testing the validity of the data using source triangulation techniques. The results of the study conclude that the work rotation model at the YPDR Nursing Academy Jakarta refers to tenure, appraisal work performance results, educational qualifications, skills, and experience and has considered aspects of planning, implementation, and evaluation, with the ultimate goal of optimizing performance institution.

American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) veterans living in rural areas have unique health care needs and face numerous barriers to accessing health care services. Among these needs is a disproportionate prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder and other mental illnesses. Since 2001, 14 rural communities have partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus to extend telemental health clinics to American Indian veterans. Administrative and, to some extent, clinical considerations of these clinics have been reviewed previously. This paper describes a model of care, evolved over a 14-year period, that weaves together evidence-based Western treatment, traditional Native healing, and rural Native communities into 4 main components: mental health care, technology, care coordination, and cultural facilitation. We delineate improvements to care made by addressing barriers such as system transference, provider-patient trust, and videoconferencing. Similarly, the discussion notes ways that the care model leverages strengths within Native communities, such as social cohesion and spirituality. Future steps include selection of appropriate performance indicators for systematic evaluation. The identification of key constructs of this care model will facilitate comparisons with other models of care in underserved populations with chronic and complex health conditions, and eventually advance the state of care for our warriors.
