B Vitamins and Their Roles in Gut Health

Abstract: B vitamins act as coenzymes in a myriad of cellular reactions. These include energy production, methyl donor generation, neurotransmitter synthesis, and immune functions. Due to the ubiquitous roles of these vitamins, their deficiencies significantly affect the host’s metabolism. Recently, novel roles of B vitamins in the homeostasis of gut microbial ecology and intestinal health continue to be unravelled. This review focuses on the functional roles and biosynthesis of B vitamins and how these vitamins influen… Show more

“…Vitamin B5producing bacteria include E. coli and Salmonella typhimurium. Escherichia coli can utilize aspartate and intermediate metabolites of valine biosynthesis as substrate (24,(105)(106)(107). Salmonella typhimurium produces pantothenate from alpha-ketoisovalerate using acetohydroxy acid synthase isozyme I and dihydroxy acid dehydratase enzymes (108).…”

“…It has long been recognized that the normal microbiota of large intestine can synthesize large amounts of biotin. Vitamin B7-producing microbiota includes B. fragilis , F. varium , and Campylobacter coli ( 24 ). Meanwhile, vitamin B7-consuming bacteria must gain vitamin B7 from the environment to maintain microbial functions and these bacteria lack the vitamin B7 biosynthetic pathways.…”

“…B-vitamins are essential micronutrients for humans and for the majority of microbes ( 3 ), and are associated with enzymatic activity as co-factors for numerous cellular reactions involving energy production, neurotransmitter synthesis, immune functions, and one-carbon metabolism ( 4 ). Vitamin B12 (cobalamin; referred here as B12), the precursor of the B12 coenzyme family, is a class of water-soluble molecules with a complex organometallic structure containing a corrin ring bound to a central cobalt atom, to which upper and lower ligands are attached ( 5 ).…”
