Intermediate role of gut microbiota in vitamin B nutrition and its influences on human health

Abstract: Vitamin B consists of a group of water-soluble micronutrients that are mainly derived from the daily diet. They serve as cofactors, mediating multiple metabolic pathways in humans. As an integrated part of human health, gut microbiota could produce, consume, and even compete for vitamin B with the host. The interplay between gut microbiota and the host might be a crucial factor affecting the absorbing processes of vitamin B. On the other hand, vitamin B supplementation or deficiency might impact the growth of … Show more

“…25 The potential link between the immune effects of VitB12 and its negative prognostic influence lies in the microbiome. It is known that VitB12 can be synthesized by human gut bacteria 26,27 and plasma VitB12 levels have been shown to correlate with gut microbiome composition and function. 10 The intricate balance of gut microbiota, in turn, has been shown to host immune responses, in an immune-metabolic interplay.…”

“…15 B 2 , B 3 , and Vc are known as mediators of intestinal inflammation for their protective barrier and immune function. According to recent reports of RIBOGUT clinical trials, 1,45,46 high-dose oral B 2 supplementation for two weeks significantly improved butyrate production, but there was no significant change in the gut microbiota composition and α-diversity.…”

“…Metabolomics studies within the gut, which we name here the gut metabolome, have been increasing in the last years due to the strong relationship found between some gut microbiome metabolic pathways and diseases, especially non-communicable ones, and due to the involvement of the gut microbiota in several biochemical functions directly associated with perturbations that can lead to the development of diseases ( De Preter et al, 2015 ). Moreover, the identification and relative quantification of metabolites in these environments can point out lifestyle and dietary habits, and nutrient balance in the gut, which in turn, allows the highlighting of specific disease predispositions ( Vernocchi et al, 2012 ), such as a mineral or vitamin deficiency of ( Lai et al, 2022 ; Wan et al, 2022 ), an excess of an inflammatory molecule ( Zhang et al, 2021 ), among others. Metabolomics is a technique that can be performed over different biological matrices such as cells, tissues, stool samples, and biofluids such as plasma, saliva, urine, and blood.…”
