Azimuthal Residual Velocity Analysis in Offset Vector for WAZ Imaging

Abstract: This paper presents an original method for azimuthal residual velocity analysis in a context of wide azimuth acquisition geometry. The 3D analysis is performed on individual Common Image Gather and takes full advantage of the offset vector binning concept which preserves the offset and azimuth information in a consistent manner. The proposed azimuthal residual velocity analysis is based on semblance optimisation by scanning isotropic and anisotropic components of a parabolic elliptical model. The significant i… Show more

“…To investigate whether step 4 is necessary, snail gathers may be displayed (Lecerf et al, 2009). Each snail gather is in fact a CIG, now sorted according to increasing azimuth in each offset range (select the data sorted in the inline offset/crossline offset domain following a spiral starting in the center).…”

“…The employers of Cary (Sensor Geophysical) and Starr (PGS) applied the idea from the start, but it took almost 10 years before the rest of the industry picked it up (Calvert et al, 2008a(Calvert et al, , 2008bPerz and Zheng, 2008;Lecerf et al, 2009). …”

“…Lecerf et al (2009) have proposed the "snail gather", where the traces are sorted by increasing azimuth within each offset range; the width of each offset class being equal to two times the interval between shot (receiver) lines. To visualize and analyse this 3D volume, it is convenient to choose a sorting of seismic traces which enables to capture the azimuthal variations.…”
