Awareness of Colorectal Cancer and Associated Factors Among Adult Patients in Jimma, South-West Ethiopia.

Abstract: Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the first commonest diagnosed cancer in men and the fourth commonest in women in Ethiopia. The most significant factors that may increase the risk of having CRC were modifiable. However, little is known about the awareness of CRC and associated factors among adult patients in study area. Therefore, the study aimed to assess the awareness of CRC and associated factors among adult patients in Jimma, South-West Ethiopia, 2020. Methods: The institution-based quantitative cros… Show more

“…In Ethiopia, little attention has been paid to examining the impact of culture, socioeconomic status, and religious beliefs on public awareness of cancer [28]. So far, few studies have been undertaken to examine public awareness of specific cancer types, such as cervical [29][30][31], breast [32][33][34], and colorectal cancers [35]. Moreover, more than 80% of cancer cases in Ethiopia are identified at an advanced stage, which is suggested to be due to a lack of public awareness of cancer signs and symptoms [28].…”

“…43 Despite several diabetes campaigns in Palestine, 44 having diabetes was the least recognized nonmodifiable risk factor, as also in Qatar, Ethiopia, and the United Kingdom. 12,[45][46][47] Therefore, awareness campaigns should focus more on the long-term consequences of diabetes including the potential to develop CRC.…”

“…Lead level (Pb) level (>0.164) mg /L, passive smoking, living nearby waste dustbins and the type of wall covering paints (old oily paints) (OR= 31.057 (95% CI: 1.549 -622.588), OR= 32.2(95% CI: 0.625-52.024, OR= 9.354 (95% CI: 1.02-85.786), OR=83 (95%CI: 1.279-5419. Respectively) as presented in table (5).Area under a curve (AUC) for ROC curve of lead was (0.686) and the optimal cut-off point to diagnose colorectal cancer was (> 0.164) mg/L Table (4.13). The cut-off point of (> 0.164) revealed high sensitivity (64%) and high specificity (68%) as presented in table (5).…”

The cut-off point of (> 0.164) revealed high sensitivity (64%) and high specificity (68%) as presented in table (5). The ROC curve was plotted for colorectal cancer patients by using their lead level cutoff points as shown in figure (1) After categorization of lead level in the sample, the odds ratio was calculated for high level groups compared to the reference group (<0.164 mg /L).…”
