Avoiding predatory journals and publishers: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: Background: Predatory journals (PJs) are journals that receive and publish articles through unethical publishing practices. Due to the boom of PJs, researchers face a wide range of journals from which to choose. Non-peer reviewed and low-quality articles can ruin the trustworthiness of science and have a damaging impact on decision-makers. “…Previous research attempted to address the researcher's knowledge and awareness of predatory journals. It suggested that various authors, especially those engaged in clinical practice rather than academia, are not aware of predatory journals [ 2 , 6 , [17] , [18] , [19] , [20] , [21] , [22] , [23] ]. Swanberg et al indicated that identifying predatory journals is a major challenge for researchers.…”

However, these publication outlets can be difficult to both characterize as well as identify which makes it difficult to determine appropriate actions against them [7][8][9][10] .…”

Um estudo com 37 professores experientes em Ghana (África), mostrou que a maioria deles tem dificuldade em distinguir PP de legítimos, especialmente em relação a indexações e fatores de impactos fraudulentos ou enganosos (Kinde, 2021).…”
