“…Although the broad antigenicity exhibited within the whole FAV group (McFerran et al, 1972;McFerran & Adair, 1977;Cowen et al, 1977), and between FAV2 and FAV12 in particular (Dorn et ah, 1980) hindered a clear-cut identification of the SMS-associated virus, isolate S90, by microtitre plate neutralization tests only, restriction enzyme analysis enabled us to distinctly define S90 as a strain of FAV12. These results were confirmed by nucleic acid hybridiza- tion tests (Mendelson, 1994; data not shown here).…”

“…Poultry flocks usually have antibodies against several different FAV serotypes, showing that infection with one serotype does not protect against others (McFerran & Adair, 1977;Monreal, 1984). A study of a recent epidemic in Germany featuring IBH, hydropericardium and low hatchability among chick embryos and broilers showed that a highly virulent FAV2 virus strain was the only pathogen involved.…”

“…IBH is usually seen in meat-producing birds between three and seven weeks of age. Morbidity is low and Mortality usually ranges between 5% and 10%, but it can reach 30 % (12)(13)(14). The main postmortem finding is pale, friable and swollen liver with multiple petechial hemorrhage (15)(16)(17).…”

“…Adenoviruses have been associated with gastrointestinal lesions and disease in several avian species and have also been suggested as part of a multiple etiology rather than primary disease agents (McFerran and Adair, 1977;Lenz et al, 1998). The fact that the eider adenovirus did not cause mortality in experimentally infected mallards could be due to the lack of environmental stressors or other co-factors required by the virus, although differences in host species' susceptibility or the relatively low, parenteral dosage that was used in the experiment may also have affected viral pathogenicity.…”
