AVES SDK: Bridging the Gap between Simulator and Flight Systems Designer

Abstract: Developing and integrating a new concept in a flight simulator usually requires rigorous implementation and integration steps which involves various parties. German Aerospace Center (DLR) is developing and operating the Air Vehicle Simulator (AVES), and focusses on shortening the simulator implementation and integration lead time. This effort targets at bridging this gap by promoting the software infrastructure of the flight simulator as AVES Software Development Kit (SDK) for flight system designers and simul… Show more

“…To achieve this goal, DLR designed the AVES Software Development Kit (AVES SDK), a full set of software modules and runnable programs from the real flight simulation facility. 9 The infrastructure contains a set of rules for the user and provides space for runtime usage and different development stages. Together with a source code management system and configuration management, the AVES SDK is an evolving environment with the ability to create reproducible and standardized software versions and to support experimental software setups with the ability to connect the simulation to the development environment during runtime.…”

“…2Simulate is the underlying real-time infrastructure of the AVES Software Development Kit (AVES SDK). 9 In order to collect evidence towards the validation of the real-time capabilities of the proposed approach, the Worst Case Transfer Times (WCTT) are measured for typical scenarios with test federates in order to validate the solution against real-time constraints. Finally, a full scale implementation is carried out in AVES which includes both AVES simulators, the traffic server and the tower simulator.…”

“…The simulation infrastructure designed for the FMTA-FMTA case is represented in the diagram of figure 10. The usual software architecture of the DLR AVES simulator [31][32][33] is used for the receiver aircraft and most of the software modules instantiated a second time for the tanker aircraft. The duplicated modules are identical for both aircraft, but have separated states such that both aircraft can be flown independently from each other.…”

“…As a consequence, the tremendous complexity of modern aircraft systems and the advanced functions that they include directly impact the complexity of the corresponding simulators. The AVES Software Development Kit (AVESSDK) framework 32 as well as a series of work processes that were defined in addition to the tool itself have been of great help for tackling and managing the simulation of such complex systems.…”
