Large-scale agriculture is increasing in anthropogenically modified areas in the Amazon Basin. Crops such as soybean, maize, oil palm, and others are being introduced to supply the world demand for food and energy. However, the current challenge is to enhance the sustainability of these areas by increasing efficiency of production chains and to improve environmental services. The Amazon Basin has experienced a paradigm shift away from the traditional slash-and-burn agricultural practices, which offers decision makers the opportunity to make innovative interventions to enhance the productivity in previously degraded areas by using trees to ecological advantage. This study describes a successful experiment integrating the production of soybean and paricá (Glycine max L. and Schizolobium amazonicum) based on previous research that indicated potential topoclimatic zones for planting paricá in the Brazilian state of Pará. This paper shows that a no-tillage system reduces the effects of drought compared to conventional tillage still used by many farmers in the region. The integrated system was implemented during the 2014/2015 season in 234.6 ha in the high-potential zone in the municipality of Ulianópolis, Pará. Both soybean and paricá were planted simultaneously. Paricá was planted in 5 m x 2 m inter-tree spacing totaling 228x10 3 trees per hectare and soybean, in 4 m x 100 m spacing, distributed in nine rows with a 0.45 m inter-row distance, occupying 80% of the area. The harvested soybean production was 3.4 t ha -1 , higher than other soybean monocultures in eastern Pará. Paricá benefited from soybean fertilization in the first year: It exhibited rapid development in height (3.26 m) and average diameter (3.85 cm). Trees and crop rotation over the following years is six years for forest species and one year for each crop. Our results confirm there are alternatives to the current production systems able to diminish negative impacts resulting from monoculture. In addition, the system provided environmental services such as reduced soil erosion and increased carbon stock by soil cover with no-tillage soybean cultivation. The soybean cover contributes to increased paricá thermal regulation and lower forestry costs. We concluded that innovative interventions are important to show local farmers that it is possible to adapt an agroforest system to large-scale production, thus changing the Amazon.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the litter production and decomposition in three mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) systems in the northeastern Pará region. The treatments were: T1-mahogany consortium with forest species; T2-homogeneous plantation of mahogany; and T3-secondary forest enriched with mahogany. Collectors of 1 m 2 opening were used to collect the litter produced monthly for a year. Evaluations were performed monthly for one year. The decomposed litter was estimated by means of the relation between the litter produced and the litter accumulated in the soil. The litter deposition dynamics did not present a significant correlation with variations in rainfall and average temperature. The homogeneous mahogany plantation produced more litter (5.6 Mg ha-1 year-1) with the leaf fraction being the most representative. The decomposition and renewal of litter did not differ between the three mahogany environments. The pure Brazilian mahogany plantation produced a larger amount of litter compared to the other planting systems, with the leaf fraction presenting the highest percentage contribution.

O entendimento das interações ambientais entre variáveis climáticas como precipitação, radiação fotossintéticamente ativa, temperatura e umidade relativa e espécies florestais possibilita o melhoramento do desempenho silvicultural. Neste trabalho, realizado na fazenda Tramontina, Pará, Brasil, foram avaliados os efeitos combinados destas variáveis climáticas sobre o incrementro diamétrico do Paricá (Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum) em monocultivo e em associação com Freijó (Cordia goeldiana), Mogno (Switenia macrophylla) combinadas ou não com a espécie agrícola Curauá (Ananas comosus var. erectifolius). O monitoramento do incremento foi por meio da variável diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) (1,30 m do solo). A partir desta variável, foram calculados os (i) incremento periódico semestral em diâmetro (IPSDAP) e (ii) incremento médio anual em diâmetro (IMADAP). Foi aplicada a análise de variância (ANOVA) e teste de médias Student Newman Keuls-SNK e as variáveis climáticas foram correlacionadas com o IPSDAP. O aumento da radiação e precipitação influiu positivamente no incremento diamétrico do Paricá. As plantas cultivadas em sistemas agroflorestais obtiveram maior IMADAP que plantas cultivadas em outros sistemas de cultivo. Assim, o incremento diamétrico está diretamente correlacionado com as variáveis climáticas, sendo influenciados positivamente quando aumenta a radiação e temperatura seguidas por precipitação, independentemente da idade e do sistema de cultivo.Palavras-chave: Amazônia; crescimento diamétrico; povoamentos agroflorestais; variáveis climáticas. CLIMATE EFFECTS OVER DIAMETER INCREMENT OF PARICÁ (Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum – Fabaceae) IN COMMERCIAL PLANTATIONS ABSTRACT: The understanding of environmental interactions between climate variables as precipitation, photosynthetically active radiation, temperature, relative humidity and tree species makes possible to improve their silvicultural performance. In this work, carried out in Tramontina farm, Pará state, Brazil, was assessed the combined effects of these climate variables over the diameter increment of Paricá (Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum) in monoculture and in association with Freijó (Cordia goeldiana), Mahogany (Switenia macrophylla) combined or not with the agricultural crop Curauá (Ananas comosus var. erectifolius). The monitoring of the increment was through the variable diameter at breast height (DBH) (1.30 m from the soil). From this variable, periodic semester increments in diameter (PSIDBH) and periodic annual increment in diameter (PAIDBH) were calculated. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied and the test of means Student Newman Keuls-SNK and the climate variables were correlated with PSIDBH. The increase of radiation and precipitation influenced positively the diameter increment of Paricá. The plants cultivated in agro-forest systems reached higher PAIDBH than plants cultivated in other cultivation systems. Therefore, the diameter increment is directly correlated with climate variables, which is influenced positively when radiation and temperature increase and are followed by precipitation, regardless their age and cultivation system.Keywords: Amazonia; growth in diameter; agro-forest stands; climate variables.
