Background: Pregnancy in all animal species requires special care and attention. During this period there is great variation in hematological and biochemical parameters. Many times these parameters are misinterpreted as being obtained from nonpregnant animals with unknown parasite status. Objective: To characterize the hematological, biochemical, and parasitological values within the peripartum period of Santa Ines sheep naturally infected. Methods: For this purpose, 45 ewes were used, with an average body weight of 50 kg. Data were collected during pregnancy, birth and, lactation. Measurements included body weight, body condition score (BCS), evaluation of conjunctive staining, and collection of blood and feces. Results: All variables changed throughout physiological stages. Weight and BCS were different between periods (p<0.05). Fecal egg counts (FEC) were higher in the peripartum period, with a predominance of Haemonchus ssp, 92.85%. Mean hematological and biochemical values varied throughout the study, (p>0.05). Conclusion: The influence of peripartum on the parameters studied should be considered and its use as a reference value. Regarding the physiological variations observed during peripartum, proper animal management could help minimizing the negative effects of parasitic infections on productivity.

“…Para ovelhas da raça Santa Inês Araújo (2009) observou valores entre 13,33 a 32,85 mg dL -1 , Cardoso et al (2010) obtiveram nível médio de 40,48 mg dL -1 , Lima et al (2016) média de 45,75 mg dL -1 e Oliveira et al (2014) média de 49,8 mg dL -1 . O trabalho teve como objetivo definir intervalos de referência para valores de metabólitos energéticos, proteicos e enzimáticos em ovinos. Os dados utilizados foram oriundos de vários experimentos realizados entre 2006 e 2018, em diversas instituições de ensino superior e pesquisa. Foi utilizado banco de dados diversificado com observações de ovinos de diferentes raças, genótipos, idades e categorias fisiológicas, criados em diferentes sistemas de manejo. Todos os animais utilizados eram saudáveis e dados de animais que apresentaram quaisquer manifestações clínicas foram descartados. Para determinar o perfil metabólico energético foram obtidos dados de glicose, colesterol, triglicerídeos, frutosamina, HDL (lipoproteína de alta densidade), LDL (lipoproteína de baixa densidade) e VLDL (lipoproteína de muito baixa densidade); para o perfil proteico, dados de proteínas totais, ácido úrico, ureia, albumina e creatinina; e para o enzimático, dados de AST (aspartato aminotransferase), GGT (gama glutamil transferase) e FA (fosfatase alcalina). As análises laboratoriais foram realizadas nos aparelhos Analisador bioquímico semiautomático modelo BIO - 2000 da marca Bioplus© e Analisador automático de bioquímica modelo PKL-125 da marca MHLab®. Para a estimativa e determinação dos valores de referência, foi utilizado programa RefVal 4.11, sendo os valores outliers removidos da avaliação. Após a determinação dos valores de referência comparou-se os dados obtidos com tabelas internacionais estabelecidas na literatura, sendo possível observar que os intervalos encontrados neste trabalho foram mais amplos, abrangendo melhor resultados obtidos em experimentos realizados no Brasil.

The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the biochemical profile of the Lacaune ewes naturally infected by gastrointestinal parasites in the pre-and postpartum period. Ewes with similar age and weight, primiparas in the final stage of gestation, totaling 24 animals were selected. Sampling days were 10 and 2 for pre-partum and 2, 6, and 12 days for post-partum to evaluate total proteins, albumin, globulin, cholesterol, triglycerides, and urea levels, in addition to thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and glutathione S-transferase (GST). Fecal examination by McMaster method was performed during bleeding, and based on the number of eggs per gram of feces (EPG), the animals were divided into two groups: A (sheep with EPG <1000) and B (sheep with EPG >1000) to evaluate the effect of the parasitic load. Statistical analyses of biochemical parameters and EPG were performed taking into account groups, evaluated each time of sampling and over time, as well as without considering the groups, comparing pre-and post-partum and over time. It was possible to verify that the influence of time had a significant (P < 0.01) impact on cholesterol, triglycerides, total proteins, albumin, globulin, TBARS, and GST specifically among sampling time. When time of collection was considered, there were some differences between groups A and B for the variables: triglycerides (day 6 post-partum) and globulin (day 2 pre-partum). It is concluded that the parasitic load did influence seric levels of the urea, triglycerides, and globulins on a determined time.
