ABSTRACT. In Brazil, cultivation of hybrid plants comprise near 40% of the area grown with vegetables. For Capsicum, hybrids of bell and chili peppers have already exceeded 50% and over 25% of all are commercialized seeds. This study aimed to evaluate new pepper hybrids in two environments, Cáceres, MT, and Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, Brazil. Nine experimental hybrids of C. baccatum var. pendulum were tested and trials were performed in a randomized block design, with three replications and eight plants per plot. In each environment, plants were assessed for canopy diameter, plant height, number of fruit per plant, mean fruit mass per plant, fruit length and diameter, pulp thickness, and content of soluble solids. Seven of the eight traits have differed significantly due to environment variation. Furthermore, genotype and environment interaction was highly significant for number of fruit per plant, mean fruit mass per plant, fruit length, and fruit diameter. Choosing a hybrid to be grown in one of the studied locations must be in accordance with the sought characteristics since there is a complex interaction for some studied traits.

Heterosis and combining ability for ornamental chili pepper

Ornamental use of Capsicum genus chili peppers has expanded due to easy seed propagation, short germination period, diversified fruit colors and harmony of potted plants. The ornamental plant sector requires cultivars adapted to different cultivation conditions in pots and gardens. Breeding programs can use heterosis and combining ability information, aiming to commercially explore hybrids or develop populations for lineage selection with desirable characteristics. However, the ornamental chili pepper field lacks studies with this data. In this study, combining ability of C. annuum accessions was determined for ornamental purposes and hybrid combinations were identified based on heterosis values. Fifteen hybrids were obtained from diallel crosses of six genotypes of C. annuum, from March to September 2014, under greenhouse conditions, grown in five-liter pots in experimental design of randomized blocks with 10 repetitions and one plant per plot. Morpho-agronomic characterization was conducted based on eight quantitative descriptors: plant height (before and after fruiting); canopy diameter; days to flourishing; days to fruiting; fruit length and diameter, and number of fruits per plant. Both additive and dominance effects play important role in controlling the studied characters, indicating hybrid exploitation as well as development of superior lineages from the progress of segregating generations. Negative heterosis values resulted in reduction in height, time for flourishing and fruiting, as well as fruit diameter and length, which are desirable for ornamental Capsicum breeding program. Considering an ideotype for ornamental chili pepper cultivars, the hybrids UENF 1626 x UENF 1750, UENF 1750 x UENF 2030 and UENF 1626 x UENF 2030 can be recommended for cultivation with ornamental purposes.

Quality of organically produced bell pepper seeds

-The production of bell pepper seeds may be affected by the plant management and harvesting point of fruits. The goal of this study was to evaluate the quality of organically produced bell pepper seeds according to free plant growth, branch thinning and ripening stage. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse with randomized block design; plants were tutored to parallel tape supports, with and without branch thinning, and fruits were harvested at three ripening stages (completely green, green/reddish and red). The following determinations were made: seed moisture content of at the time of harvest and after post-harvest rest, number of seeds per fruit, seed germination, and seedling emergence. It is possible to conclude that the production of bell pepper seeds in an organic system is viable, resulting in seeds with a germination percentage and seedling emergence above 90%. The management system of plants without branch thinning results in the production of seeds with greater viability and higher quantity per fruit. The cultivation of bell peppers for seed production may be carried out with fruits at the green ripening stage (51 days after anthesis), without any quality loss.Index terms: Capsicum annuum L., management, time of harvest, organic agriculture.Qualidade de sementes de pimentão cultivado em sistema orgânico RESUMO -A produção de sementes de pimentão pode ser influenciada pelo manejo da planta e ponto de colheita dos frutos. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade de sementes de pimentão produzidas em sistema orgânico, em função do crescimento livre e desbaste de ramos, e do estádio de maturação dos frutos. O experimento foi conduzido em ambiente protegido com delineamento de blocos ao acaso, sendo as plantas tutoradas com fitilhos paralelos, com e sem desbaste de ramos e frutos coletados em três estádios de maturação (completamente verde, verde/avermelhado e vermelho). As seguintes determinações foram realizadas: teor de água das sementes no momento da colheita e após repouso pós-colheita; número de sementes por fruto; germinação de sementes e emergência de plântulas. Pode-se concluir que a produção de sementes de pimentão em sistema orgânico é viável, resultando em sementes com porcentagem de germinação e emergência de plântulas superiores a 90%. A forma de manejo das plantas sem o desbaste de hastes resulta na produção de sementes com maior viabilidade e quantidade por fruto. O cultivo do pimentão para a produção de sementes pode ser realizado com frutos no estádio de maturação verde (51 dias após a antese), sem prejuízo da sua qualidade.Termos para indexação: Capsicum annuum L., manejo, ponto de colheita, agricultura orgânica.
