Electrical conductivity test for assessing the physiological potential of black oat seedsCompanies have been increasingly seeking to improve the internal control of seeds quality and, faster methods to assess seeds vigor, such as electrical conductivity test, is a useful tool in decision making about the final destination of the lots. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the electrical conductivity test to estimate the vigor of black oat seeds, in order to establish an efficient methodology for implementation. Were used four lots of black oats cultivar 'IAPAR 61 (Ibiporã)', being assessed: a) number of seeds: 50 to 100 seeds in shell, b) soaking volumes: 50, 75 and 100 mL of deionized water, c) soaking periods: 4, 8, 16 and 20 hours, under constant germinator temperature at 20 °C. At the same time, moisture content of seeds and the conduct of germination and seedling emergence were evaluated in the field. Data were analyzed in completely randomized design, with four replicates. The electrical conductivity test for black oat seeds can be achieved by using 100 seeds in shell, soaked in 100 mL of deionized water, at 20 °C, for 16 or 20 hours.
-The production of bell pepper seeds may be affected by the plant management and harvesting point of fruits. The goal of this study was to evaluate the quality of organically produced bell pepper seeds according to free plant growth, branch thinning and ripening stage. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse with randomized block design; plants were tutored to parallel tape supports, with and without branch thinning, and fruits were harvested at three ripening stages (completely green, green/reddish and red). The following determinations were made: seed moisture content of at the time of harvest and after post-harvest rest, number of seeds per fruit, seed germination, and seedling emergence. It is possible to conclude that the production of bell pepper seeds in an organic system is viable, resulting in seeds with a germination percentage and seedling emergence above 90%. The management system of plants without branch thinning results in the production of seeds with greater viability and higher quantity per fruit. The cultivation of bell peppers for seed production may be carried out with fruits at the green ripening stage (51 days after anthesis), without any quality loss.Index terms: Capsicum annuum L., management, time of harvest, organic agriculture.
Criteria for conduction of tetrazolium test on araucaria seedsAbstract -The objective of this work was to determine criteria for the conduction of tetrazolium test on araucaria (Araucaria angustifolia) seeds, with greater execution speed and detailed characterization of viability groups. Initially, germination and tetrazolium tests were conducted according to the Rules for Seed Testing for Araucaria spp. After that, more practical methods for carrying out the tetrazolium test were evaluated, without pre-wetting of the seeds and using excised embryos immersed directly in the tetrazolium solution; three concentrations of the solution (0.075, 0.2, and 0.5%), three staining periods (1, 2, and 4 hours), and two staining temperatures (30 and 40°C) were tested. The means obtained for each conducted test were compared by the Scott-Knott test, at 1% probability. The tetrazolium test may be effectively used through the excision of araucaria embryos and the direct immersion in the tetrazolium solution using the following combinations of concentration/period/temperature: 0.5%/2 hours/30°C, 0.075%/4 hours/40°C, or 0.5%/2 hours/40°C, allowing the classification of the seeds into two different viability groups (viable and unviable).
