BackgroundPortable blood glucose meters (PBGMs) allow easy glucose measurements. As animal‐specific PBGMs are not available everywhere, those for humans are widely used.ObjectivesTo assess the accuracy and precision of 9 PBGMs in canine whole blood (WB) and plasma, based on the ISO 15197:2013.AnimalsFifty‐nine client‐owned dogs attending the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.MethodsAnalytical evaluation of 100 blood samples was performed for accuracy and 23 for precision (glucose 29–579 mg/dL) following ISO recommendations. A PBGM was considered accurate if 95% of the measurements were within ±15 mg/dL from the reference when glucose was <100 mg/dL and within ±15% when it was ≥100 mg/dL, and if 99% of them were within zones A and B in error grid analysis (EG). A hexokinase‐based analyzer was used as reference. Ninety samples were assessed for hematocrit interferences.ResultsAccuracy requirements were not fulfilled by any PBGM in WB (74% of measurements within the limits for the most accurate) and by 1 only in plasma. However, the EG analysis in WB was passed by 6 PBGM and by all in plasma. The most accurate were also the most precise, with coefficients of variation <5% in WB and <3% in plasma. Hematocrit correlated with bias against the reference method in 4 PBGM (r = −0.243 − [−0.371]; P < .021).Conclusions and Clinical ImportanceThis disparity among PBGM suggests that meters approved for humans need to be evaluated before use in other species.

The use of human equipment in veterinary medicine is very common; therefore, it is essential that it is tested and validated. In this study, a comparison was made between blood levels of glucose, lactate, triglycerides, and cholesterol obtained by the portable device Accutrend® Plus and those found in laboratory methods considered standard for the measurement of parameters of 11 Arabian (and Arabian crossed) horses which completed prolonged endurance effort. Collection was made in five stages: during rest, after 66 km, at the end of the race of 160 km, and 2 and 15 h after the race. Three venous blood samples were collected, the first being used immediately for the measurement of the parameters on the portable device and the other twowith sodium fluoride and without anticoagulant-were packed and immediately sent to a reference laboratory. Statistical analysis consisted of the Student's t test, Pearson correlation, and graphic representation of Bland and Altman (1986) to compare the two measurement methods and Tukey's test for evaluating the effect of variation in relation to the effort according to the standard laboratory method for parameter measurement. Agreement and correlation were not found between the values of glucose, lactate, triglycerides, and blood cholesterol measured by the portable device Accutrend® Plus and the referenced laboratory methods for these parameters in horses undergoing the endurance test, which reinforces the need for more research to definitely validate or invalidate the use of this technology for the species.

Os glicosímetros (GT) são estratégia importante para mensuração da glicemia. Devem estar dentro das especificações da ISO 15197:2013 e avaliados pela análise da grade de erros. Objetivou-se avaliar a acurácia de dois glicosímetros veterinários (GT1 e GT2), pela comparação dos valores de glicemia mensurados em sangue capilar, com aqueles fornecidos por métodos laboratoriais de referência em amostras plasmáticas, transformadas ou não em valores de plasma equivalente. Na avaliação de GT1 em amostras de sangue capilar e o método laboratorial hexoquinase obtiveram-se média das diferenças de 25,90 mg/dL e 26 % das amostras recaíram sobre os limites propostos pela ISO15197: 2013. A comparação de GT1 aos valores de glicemia estimados para plasma equivalente, mostrou média de diferenças de 10,89 mg/dL e 99 % das amostras atenderam aos limites pretendidos. Comparações avaliação de GT2 e o método laboratorial glicose oxidase em amostras de sangue total capilar, a média das diferenças foi 10,58 mg/dL e 22 % das amostras atenderam aos intervalos propostos pela ISO15197: 2013; quando avaliado pela glicemia estimada para plasma equivalente, a média das diferenças foi de 9,7029 mg/dL e 99% das amostras atenderam aos limites. Quando avaliados pela grade de erros de erros, 87% das amostras avaliadas por GT1 recaíram sobre as zonas de erros A e B e aquelas avaliadas por GT2 apresentaram 86% das amostras sobre tais zonas. Os glicosímetros avaliados não apresentaram a acurácia para mensuração da glicemia capilar conforme os padrões expostos pela normativa ISO 15197:2013. They must be within the specifications of ISO 15197: 2013 and evaluated by analysis of the error grid. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of two veterinary glucometers (GT1 and GT2) by comparing the blood glucose values measured in capillary blood with those provided by reference laboratory method in plasma samples, transformed or not at equivalent plasma values. In the evaluation of GT1 in capillary blood samples and the hexokinase laboratory method, the mean differences were 25.90 mg / dL and 26% of the samples fell within the limits proposed by ISO 15197: 2013. The comparison of GT1 to the estimated plasma glucose values showed a mean difference of 10.89 mg / dL and 99% of the samples were in the desired limits. Comparisons of GT2 and laboratory glucose oxidase in capillary blood samples, mean differences were 10.58 mg / dL and 22% of the samples met the ranges proposed by ISO; 15197: 2013. When evaluated by the estimated plasma glucose, the mean differences were 9.7029 mg / dL and 99% of the samples met the limits.
