Availability indication as key enabler for ultra-reliable communication in 5G

Abstract: Due to its flexibility, cost-efficiency, and the ability to support mobility, wireless connectivity is seen today as a key enabler for a wide range of applications beyond classical mobile communications. A significant part of these applications depends on the capability of the wireless communication system to provide reliable connectivity. However, due to the randomness of the wireless propagation channel, reliability is still a critical issue in these systems. Some applications, such as vehicular and industri… Show more

“…This becomes clear, with applications addressed in Section II requiring a reliable reception of rapidly transmitted data. A failure rate even below 10 −7 might be necessary in some 5G applications [24], [25]. This corresponds to merely 3.17 seconds of outage per year.…”

“…Identified sources of unreliability include resource depletion and interference. In [11], an availability indicator parameter is introduced as a key enabler for ultra-reliability in 5G, where availability is defined in terms of absence or presence of link reliability at the time of transmission.…”

“…Several solutions are offered for adapting running applications to the URC operation. Availability indication is considered as an indicator for applications to assess the availability of URC operation over the link [8]. In order to offer URC in various conditions, reliable service compositions are considered to offer different versions of URC for users [2].…”
