Autoxidation of Ubiquinol-6 Is Independent of Superoxide Dismutase

Abstract: Ubiquinone (Q) is an essential, lipid soluble, redox component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Much evidence suggests that ubiquinol (QH 2 ) functions as an effective antioxidant in a number of membrane and biological systems by preventing peroxidative damage to lipids. It has been proposed that superoxide dismutase (SOD) may protect QH 2 from autoxidation by acting either directly as a superoxide-semiquinone oxidoreductase or indirectly by scavenging superoxide. In this study, such an interaction betw… Show more

“…Thus, it is possible for HO 2 · to diffuse across the membrane and resynthesize O 2 ·2 extracellularly. Another mechanism would involve redox-active molecules such as ubisemiquinones, which have also been shown to be possible "O 2 ·2 carriers" across the membrane through a series of chain reactions (32). However, issues regarding how these mechanisms are working in our system are currently poorly understood in the field.…”
