Automotive Ride Comfort Control Using MR Fluid Damper

Abstract: In this paper, the performance of automotive ride comfort using Bouc-Wen type magneto-rheological (MR) fluid damper is studied using a two degree of freedom quarter car model. The sliding mode control is used to force the MR damper to follow the dynamics of ideal sky-hock model. The model is tested on two excitations, the first is a road hump with severe peak amplitude and the second is a statistical random road. The results are generated and presented in time and frequency domains using Matlab/Simulink softwa… Show more

“…The vibration control response of semi-active suspension system for pitch angle acceleration was evaluated via computer simulation. El-Kafafy et al [15] investigated the effectiveness of sliding mode control (SMC) in semi-active quarter car model. Simulation work showed the effectiveness and improvement in results of proposed controller under a road hump and random road conditions for vehicle road holding ability.…”

“…The application of MR shock absorbers in semi-active suspension systems related to ride comfort and vehicle stability has been investigated by many researchers [6][7][8]. Batterbee et al [9] performed experimental work to investigate the controller performance in semi-active suspension system with MR shock absorber using the hardware-in-the-loopsimulation (HILS) method.…”

“…Há soluções simples que empregam materiais visco-elásticos como amortecedores passivos e outros mais sofisticados baseadas no uso de materiais inteligentes e técnicas de controle moderno [1]. De uma maneira geral as técnicas de controle utilizadas neste tipo de problema podem ser classificadas em três grandes grupos: técnicas de controle passivo, ativo e semi-ativo [3].…”

“…Blundell [29] modelled the rear suspension system by using Adams view and showed the effect of rubber bush compliance on vehicle suspension movement. By using quarter car model, several researchers have carried out investigations on vehicle performance analysis [5,[31][32][33][34] using hydraulic shock absorber or MR fluid damper [35]. The full car modelling and analysis [36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43] had been carried out by some of the researchers.…”
