Automatic Measurement of Drilling Parameters to Evaluate the Mechanical Properties of Soils

Abstract: Any underground work, carried out either to perform excavations, should be based on detailed knowledge of the geological, hydrogeological and geomechanical conditions of the underlying materials. The continuous automatic diagraphy is a test that consists in the continuous surveying of drilling parameters, with total destruction of the core, which can be used, together with geognostic probing surveys and a detailed definition of the stratigraphy of the subsoil, to evaluate the geotechnical characteristics of so… Show more

“…4). Through analysis of these parameters it is possible to assess the specific energy of excavation used to break down the rock, generally expressed in kWh/m 3 (Cardu et al, 2013). The specific energy can be linked to the geomechanical quality of the rock mass along the tunnel's layout.…”

“…that of landfills and waste dumps) has to be characterized in terms of geotechnical parameters. These parameters are affected by the subsurface material types and textures [4][5][6]. Moreover, soil type and texture define properties, such as permeability [7], liquefaction potential [8], and freezing properties [9] that affect choice of material handling machines required to construct the planned facility or landscape.…”

“…In particular, land subsidence and fracturing rather than soil characteristics may determine considerable alterations in ground movements. [11][12][13]. Furthermore, other parameters linked to blasting specifications influence the wave propagation and the connected ground vibration.…”
