Automatic layout optimization of an EMC filter

Abstract: Abstract-The transfer function of an EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility) filter is strongly disturbed in high frequency due to stray electromagnetic phenomena. On the one hand the imperfections of the components but also all magnetic couplings on the other hand. Although these effects seem to be negative, it is possible to reduce the impacts of these imperfections on the filter response, and even to use them in order to improve its behavior. A proper arrangement of components and a clever layout of tracks are… Show more

“…This calculation neglects the redirection of the field lines caused by the magnetic material. But similar to the assumptions in [11,12,23], the redirection of the field line is very limited since this investigation is focused strictly on stray flux, whose magnetic field lines propagate most of the way through non-ferromagnetic material. As illustrated in Fig.4, center symmetrical stray flux distribution can be observed in the 500 kHz measurement result, which matches our expectation.…”

“…Mutual-parasitic has been analyzed in numerous works [11][12][13][14][15][16] and has shown to influence EMI filter performances. Papers [12,13,15,[17][18][19] discuss the influence of layout on EMI filter performance including the effect of both self-parasitic and coupling. Papers [16,20] show the coupling influence on three-phase EMI filter design and also show that magnetic shielding helps to improve performance.…”

“…From this point, 3D simulations are used to identify different stray coupling effects on EMC filter transfer functions. The work of [8] shows a hierarchical importance of different coupling mechanisms and later in [11] the same research group shows a possibility to use stray magnetic couplings to optimize the filters performance by adapting the PCB trace layout. This is done with Partial Equivalent Element Circuitsimulations (PEEC), which are usually used to model tracks or cables.…”

“…There have been presented various measurement techniques for mutual coupling measurement [2], [1], extraction [3], mutual coupling reduction [4] and optimization [5] - [7]. Therefore, there is lack of information on techniques and possibilities, using in market available, the most popular 3D electromagnetic modeling tools that could help in more effective manner to solve these problems.…”
