Automatic, computer‐based speech assessment on edentulous patients with and without complete dentures – preliminary results

Abstract: Dental rehabilitation of edentulous patients with complete dentures includes not only aesthetics and mastication of food, but also speech quality. It was the aim of this study to introduce and validate a computer-based speech recognition system (ASR) for automatic speech assessment in edentulous patients after dental rehabilitation with complete dentures. To examine the impact of dentures on speech production, the speech outcome of edentulous patients with and without complete dentures was compared. Twenty-eig… Show more

“…As discussed in prior studies of our workgroup, the word recognition is not equal to speech intelligibility but does correlate highly with it . The Auotmatic Speech Recognition system (ASR) provides a high reliability for interrater tests between trained listeners as well as for the comparison between the ASR and single trained listeners . Therefore, it can be used for the comparison between different therapeutic strategies.…”

“…This finding was in agreement with the results of our previous study and may be attributed to the possible role of biomechanics in denture stability in eccentric movements. Aside from the incorrect position of premolars, lack of stability of denture can lead to speech problems …”

“…Also, tooth extraction can impair the masticatory function. Such adverse effects on the psychological status and masticatory function adversely affect the quality of life . Conventional complete denture (CCD) is a popular treatment option for edentulous patients.…”

“…After dental rehabilitation with entire dentures, Stelzle et al (2010) have aimed to introduce and authenticate a computer-based Speech Recognition System (ASR) for automatic speech assessment in edentulous patients. The speech result of edentulous patients with and without entire dentures has been compared for inspecting the crash of dentures on speech production.…”
