Automatic Camera Selection in the Context of Basketball Game

Abstract: This article presents an automatic video editing method for video stream selection in a multi-camera environment. The specific context of this study is Basketball game recording and broadcasting. In order to offer the best view to spectator our method is based on action detection in order to select the right camera. We use an azimuth camera to detect the center of gravity of the players representing the action in the match. The effectiveness of our method has been tested by comparing the editing obtained with … Show more

“…Camera selection is an important part of broadcast directing (i.e., video editing), where the goal is to choose optimal camera views for conveying a story based on various criteria, such as the visibility of objects-of-interest [9,10,21,42,45], smoothness [6,7], "gravity" (i.e., layout) of players [20], and so on. Most such video editing systems are built on the predefined rules-of-thumb [9,10,19,42,45], which are conveyed through computational measurements like ball size, number of subjects, and speaker visible.…”

“…Camera Viewpoint Prediction In single camera systems, previous techniques have been proposed to predict camera angles for PTZ cameras [7] and to generate natural-looking normal field-of-view (NFOV) video from 360 o panoramic views [33,32,22]. In multi-camera systems, camera viewpoint prediction methods select a subset of all available cameras [39,12,35,3,17,18,43,40,26]. In broadcast systems, semi-automatic [16] and fully automatic systems have been developed in practice.…”

“…Moreover, real-time detection of players can be valuable in identifying the opponent's formation and strategy, and might give some insight on the likelihood of a certain play be successful. This can lead to better strategies [Lefevre, Bombardier and Charpentier et al (2018)]. One of the principle challenges in sports science is a target examination of player execution.…”
