Automated video looping with progressive dynamism

Abstract: Given a short video we create a representation that captures a spectrum of looping videos with varying levels of dynamism, ranging from a static image to a highly animated loop. In such a progressively dynamic video, scene liveliness can be adjusted interactively using a slider control. Applications include background images and slideshows, where the desired level of activity may depend on personal taste or mood. The representation also provides a segmentation of the scene into independently looping regions, e… Show more

“…The consistency constraints are adaptively attenuated by recognizing that discontinuities are less perceptible in high-frequency regions [Kwatra et al 2003]. Troublesome scene regions are replaced by static (nonlooping) pixels, either using assisted segmentation [Agarwala et al 2005;Tompkin et al 2011;Bai et al 2012;Joshi et al 2012] or as part of the optimization [Liao et al 2013]. However, for some scenes there may be little dynamism left.…”

“…Users simply capture a short hand-held video of a person, push a button, and our system outputs a portrait cinemagraph. There are a number of recent techniques for creating cinemagraphs, including mobile apps [3, 4, 5] and several research systems [107,59,116,71]. However, these techniques are all challenged by portraits, because people are not good at keeping their head and body perfectly still.…”
