Automated Measurement of the Size and Concentration of Airborne Particulate Nitrate

Abstract: A three-stage, cascaded integrated collection and vaporization system has been developed to provide automated, 10 min resolution monitoring of the size and concentration of fine particulate nitrate in the atmosphere. Particles are collected (7 min) by a humidified impaction process, and analyzed in place (3 min) by flash vaporization and chemiluminescent detection of the evolved nitrogen oxides. The three size fractions, < 0.45 µm, 0.45-1.0 µm, and 1.0-2.5 µm, are chosen to distinguish the condensation, drople… Show more

“…The humidifier (MH-110, PermaPure, Toms River, NJ) with a 9 L/min air stream and an input water vapor content of 20-95% relative humidity (RH) consistently produces an output value of approximately 65-95% RH, high enough to minimize particle bounce. Similar humidifiers have been successfully employed in other inertial impaction collection systems (Stolzenburg et al 2003).…”

“…There data were collected in Fresno in -2001(Watson et al, 2000 as part of the EPA PM Supersites program (http://www.epa.gov/ttnamti1/ supersites.html). These measurements were made by flash volatilizing NH 4 NO 3 , reducing HNO 3 across a heated catalyst to nitric oxide (NO), and detecting NO by chemiluminescence (Stolzenburg et al, 2003;Chow et al, 2008). It was reported that 24 h averages of these high-time-resolution observations were well correlated with, but 20-40 % lower than, 24 h PM 2.5 filter samples (annual averages).…”

“…The development of continuous instruments that measure NO À 3 and SO ¼ 4 by flash volatilization (Stolzenburg and Hering 2000;Stolzenburg et al 2003;Drewnick et al 2003) or by on-line ion chromatography (IC; Weber et al 2001Weber et al , 2003 provide faster response, avoid filterbased sampling artifacts, and allow a better understanding of source contributions to PM mass, ambient aerosol transformations, and human exposure.…”
