A dynamic development of methodologies of analytical flow injection measurements during four decades since their invention has reinforced the solid position of flow analysis in the arsenal of techniques and instrumentation of contemporary chemical analysis. With the number of published scientific papers exceeding 20,000, and advanced instrumentation available for environmental, food, and pharmaceutical analysis, flow analysis is well established as an extremely vital field of modern flow chemistry, which is developed simultaneously with methods of chemical synthesis carried out under flow conditions. This review work is based on almost 300 original papers published mostly in the last decade, with special emphasis put on presenting novel achievements from the most recent 2-3 years in order to indicate current development trends of this methodology. Besides the evolution of the design of whole measuring systems, and including especially new applications of various detections methods, several aspects of implications of progress in nanotechnology, and miniaturization of measuring systems for application in different field of modern chemical analysis are also discussed.

As the demand for uranium production-based energy worldwide has been increasing in the last decades to maintain nuclear growth for electricity production, there are great efforts towards developing an easy and inexpensive method for uranium extraction and separation from its ores. For this purpose, mesoporous inorganic cation exchangers provide an efficient separation technology that can help streamline production and lower overall cost. This study describes the development of nano-structured mesoporous sodium zirconium phosphate (NaZrP-CEX) for separation and extraction of uranyl ions from real samples. The fabricated NaZrP-CEX was well characterized by various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), N2 adsorption/desorption, Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential). The kinetics/thermodynamic behaviors of uranyl ion adsorption into NaZrP-CEX from an aqueous solution were minutely studied. The kinetic studies showed that the pseudo-second order model gave a better description for the uptake process. The negative value of ΔG indicate high feasibility and spontaneity of adsorption. Finally, mesoporous NaZrP-CEX can be regenerated using both of HNO3 (0.05 M) or HCl (1 M) up to seven cycles of operation.

A simple method for direct measurement of uranium (U) in seawater using triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was established. The method provides a good analytical performance with respect to detection limit, accuracy, precision and sample throughput. During the method development and application, several interesting facts were observed: 1) Comparison results for reference material using different quantitation approaches indicate that isotope dilution (using U) is the most reliable to achieve accurateU measurement. The results obtained for direct U measurement in 50-fold diluted seawater samples (n = 112) also underline the difference between isotope dilution and internal (or external) standardization. 2) Appropriate dilution of seawater is important to minimize the matrix effect on the ICP-MS measurement and 20-50 dilution is recommended for natural seawater samples. 3) The sensitivity of ICP-MS was observed to increase in the beginning of sample measurement, and then decrease with the continuous injection of samples, which is believed as a consequence of matrix effect from the seawater to the ionization efficiency in the plasma. 4) When measuring samples taken from large volume of seawater stored in immovable containers for relatively long period (i.e., several months), the uranium concentration and salinity data showed slightly increasing trends with the increase of water depth in the container. Therefore, cautions need to be paid in sampling representativeness when performingU measurement for such long-term stored large volume samples.
