Automated anthropometric phenotyping with novel Kinect-based three-dimensional imaging method: comparison with a reference laser imaging system

Abstract: Low-cost 3D Kinect-based imaging systems have the potential for providing automated accurate anthropometric and related body measurements for relatively large components; further hardware and software developments may be able to improve system small-component resolution.

“…Traditional anthropometric measurements of body size and shape, including body mass index (BMI), various girths, body segmental circumferences, and mid-sagittal diameter are surrogates for adiposity and are associated with graded risks of cardio-metabolic disease [22,28]. Photonic imaging of the body with lasers, lights and cameras enables the generation of three-dimensional (3D) body outline images or shapes [29].…”

“…Another rapidly developing field involves a broad area largely encompassed by “photogrammetry” methods that capture body shape and dimensions from surface mapping technologies ranging from 3D whole-body laser systems [85] to cellular telephone cameras [86, 87]. All of these approaches share in common the derivation of body volumes, linear dimensions, and circumferences that are used to predict whole body and regional fat mass.…”

“…The article [15] includes the description of anthropometry for measuring body composition in human clinical research and practice. It is worth noticing that in order to recognize the location, Kinect does not require a patient to wear additional hardware that could limit his/her movement [16].…”
