Automated aerosol puffers effectively deliver 1‐OCTEN‐3‐OL, an oviposition antagonist useful against spotted‐wing drosophila

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Automated aerosol puffers releasing behaviorally active volatile organic compounds can deter insect pests in crops. During 2016, we tested the efficacy of aerosol puffer arrays emitting 1-octen-3-ol at reducing Drosophila suzukii oviposition in fall-bearing raspberries in Western New York State. During 2017, we compared the performance of aerosol puffers with a passive diffusion release method (vial dispensers), as well as puffer timing and placement within the field. RESULTS: During 2016, we found… Show more

“…We could achieve 2 days of constant relatively high release rate (~10 mg h −1 ) using a polyethylene sachet. Future effort will include use and evaluation of puffer technology for automated and programmable dispensing of 2‐pentylfuran as similarly conducted with 1‐octen‐3‐ol 29 …”

“…Future effort will include use and evaluation of puffer technology for automated and programmable dispensing of 2-pentylfuran as similarly conducted with 1-octen-3-ol. 29 The evolutionary relevance of 2-pentylfuran on SWD behavior is currently unknown. The compound seems to have at least several different origins, including as a fruit metabolite, 36 a fermentation by-product (current study), and microbial activity.…”
