2‐Pentylfuran: a novel repellent of Drosophila suzukii

Abstract: BACKGROUND Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), spotted‐wing drosophila (SWD), is a major invasive pest of soft‐skinned fruits in North America and Europe. Although insecticides are currently the primary method of SWD control, it is imperative to develop alternative management approaches, such as behavioral control through the use of repellents and attractants. This study explores the repellent properties of 2‐pentylfuran as an oviposition deterrent on raspberries. RESULTS 2‐Pentylfuran was found to be aversive to … Show more

“…For the 10 species T. aeranthos, T. bergeri, T. aeranthos x T. bergeri, T. aeranthos 'uruguay', T. albertiana, T. ixioides, T. ionantha, T. tenuifolia, T. cacticola, and T. lorentziana, their aromatic profiles are quite similar between each other's and are largely dominated by the 8 volatiles compounds described just above: benzaldehyde (22), benzacetaldehyde (24), hexanol (40), hexanal (43), heptanal (44), octanal (47), nonanal (49), and furan-2pentyl (59). The number of volatile compounds extracted for each species is comprised between 8 (T. tenuifolia) to 25 compounds (T. cacticola) when both extraction methods are combined.…”

“…2-pentylfuran (59) has also been identified in 10 of the 14 Tillandsia species studied here. This compound is described in the literature to be a repellent of Drosophila suzukii in order to avoid the use of insecticides [ 47 ]. Consequently, the emission of 2-pentylfuran (59) by 10 of the Tillandsia species studied here could be linked to a repellent activity.…”

“…The multiple-choice test (N = 9) was conducted using 60 cm × 60 cm × 60 cm screened cages (shop.bugdorm.com) as described in [34]. Briefly, within each cage, seven 250 mL gated cup traps (six traps baited with one of guava, guava juice, mango, orange, Surinam cherry, and white sapote, and one trap baited with torula yeast) were randomly positioned in a circle (55 cm diameter) with equal distance (20 cm apart) from each trap along the circumference.…”

“…The general way by which this pest is managed is via the routine use of broad-spectrum pesticides, which is costly, carries environmental risks, e.g., via carry-over effects on other beneficial insects, and disrupts the integrated pest management of other pests [ 5 ]. Other management options, such as exclusion netting [ 6 ], the use of repellents [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ], sanitation [ 11 , 12 ] or mass trapping [ 10 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ], have therefore been considered as more environmentally friendly alternatives. Unfortunately, up till now none of these has proven to be sufficiently effective in practice.…”
