Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation

Abstract: Cartilage repair or restoration in the knee provides short-term success with microfracture, autologous chondrocyte implantation, or osteochondral autograft. There are patient-specific and defect-specific factors that influence clinical outcomes.

“…Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) has been used with reasonable success to treat focal lesions in the knee joint 2,3 ; however, it is still unclear whether ACI is superior to other treatment strategies. [4][5][6] Further, the ACI technique suffers from a number of technical disadvantages, including the need to biopsy regions of the undamaged joint surface to isolate chondrocytes and the dedifferentiation of these chondrocytes during monolayer expansion. [7][8][9] This has led to increased interest in the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of damaged and diseased articular cartilage.…”

“…Lately, several systematic reviews have been published on the comparison of ACI with the two other surgical techniques [26][27][28][29][30]. These reviews could not conclude on the superiority of ACI over MF and osteochondral autograft transfer.…”
