“…An estimated 50 million Americans have been diagnosed with autoimmune diseases (American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association, n.d.‐a), which can include commonly known chronic illnesses, such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, lupus, celiac disease, and rheumatoid arthritis (American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association, n.d.‐b). The fields of medicine and public health have historically struggled to strictly define and categorize autoimmune disorders (ADs) because of the broad range of health issues that may be classified as such (Delaleu & Peck, ), but generally, ADs are “specific, adapted immune reactions against specific self antigens” (Serefhanoglu, Tapan, Ertenli, Kalyoncu, & Uner, , p. 826), meaning that an individual's immune system may sometimes attack perfectly healthy body cells and tissue by mistake. Very often, the onset of an AD may be triggered by considerable stress (O'Leary, ), such as dealing with the loss of a partner, remaining in the closet, coming out as gay and dealing with the aftermath, or experiencing a long period of unemployment.…”
