Introduction: Oral health self-perception is the individual assessment of the oral conditions. Objective: To evaluate the oral health selfperception of adults and the factors that influence this perception. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at a primary healthcare unit in São Luís, Maranhão. Data were collected through the administration of a not validated questionnaire and a clinical examination at the dental office. The outcome was oral health self-perception and the independent variables were age, gender, ethnicity, marital status, schooling, monthly household income, dental treatment, the conclusion of treatment, last type of service used, toothache in the previous six months, untreated dental caries, missing teeth, the DMFT index, root caries and removable partial denture. Descriptive statistics and the chi-square tests were performed with a 5% level of significance. Results: The sample was composed by 129 adults aged 25 to 55 years. The female gender (80.6%), brown skin color (62.8%) and low income (55.8%) were the most prevalent independent variables. Ninety-three percent of the sample had undergone some type of dental treatment, but only 36.4% concluded treatment. Seventy-nine percent perceived their oral health as negative. No significant associations were found between a negative self-perception and the independent variables analyzed. Conclusion: Most of surveyed individuals had a negative self-perception of their oral health, however, the perception was not associated with any of the exploratory variables.

Satisfação com saúde bucal de idosos brasileiros: um estudo de gênero com modelo hierárquico

Os objetivos do presente estudo foram identificar as diferenças de gênero em relação aos fatores associados à satisfação com saúde bucal de idosos e estimar a prevalência de edentulismo por gênero e faixa etária. Foram incluídos 2.052 idosos com 60 anos e mais de idade, residentes em Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais, Brasil. A regressão de Poisson foi utilizada para estimar a prevalência de edentulismo. A associação entre satisfação bucal e as variáveis independentes foi realizada por meio da regressão ordinal com modelo hierárquico multidimensional. A prevalência de edentulismo nos gêneros masculino e feminino foi de 63% e 68,8%, respectivamente. A maioria dos idosos do gênero masculino (63%) e feminino (57%) estava satisfeita com a saúde bucal. O modelo final ajustado, para ambos os gêneros, foi formado por variáveis referentes ao ambiente externo, comportamentos de saúde e condições de saúde bucal. Conclui-se que a satisfação com a saúde bucal é influenciada fortemente pelas condições de saúde bucal e por comportamentos de saúde, e que os fatores associados são diferentes para cada gênero.

Health inequalities have not decreased over the last decades and for some outcomes have even increased, with disadvantaged groups in contemporary societies still enduring higher burdens of mortality and morbidity, including oral diseases. 1,2 These stark inequalities in health most often take the pattern of a social gradient, whereby each lower socioeconomic position group has a higher health burden than the immediately less deprived group. 3 These social gradients are linked to structural factors like policies of economic liberalization, changes in labour markets and an austerity approach to social policies. 4,5 Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has both magnified previously existing inequalities and created new ones in what has been called the syndemic of COVID-19, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the social determinants of health. 6 The pandemic has exacerbated access barriers with the more disadvantaged population
