PurposeThis paper aims to analyze and provide insight on the algorithms for the optimization of construction site layout planning (CSLP). It resolves problems, such as the selection of suitable algorithms, considering the optimality, optimization objectives and representation of layout solutions. The approaches for the better utilization of optimization algorithms are also presented.Design/methodology/approachTo achieve the above, existing records (results = 200) were selected from three databases: Web of Science, ScienceDirect and Scopus. By implementing a systematic protocol, the articles related to the optimization algorithms for the CLSP (results = 75) were identified. Moreover, various related themes were collated and analyzed according to a coding structure.FindingsThe results indicate the consistent and increasing interest on the optimization algorithms for the CLSP, revealing that the trend in shifting to smart approaches in the construction industry is significant. Moreover, the interest in metaheuristic algorithms is dominant because 65.3% of the selected articles focus on these algorithms. The optimality, optimization objectives and solution representations are also important in algorithm selection. With the employment of other algorithms, self-developed applications and commercial software, optimization algorithms can be better utilized for solving CSLP problems. The findings also identify the gaps and directions for future research.Research limitations/implicationsThe selection of articles in this review does not consider the industrial perspective and practical applications of commercial software. Further comparative analyses of major algorithms are necessary because this review only focuses on algorithm types.Originality/valueThis paper presents a comprehensive systematic review of articles published in the recent decade. It significantly contributes to the demonstration of the status and selection of CLSP algorithms and the benefit of using these algorithms. It also identifies the research gaps in knowledge and reveals potential improvements for future research.

O objetivo deste artigo é identificar, analisar e estratificar em classes de problemas os componentes, modelos e métodos das soluções existentes na literatura que integram Modelagem da Informação da Construção (BIM) e Internet das Coisas (IoT). Foram adotados os procedimentos metodológicos da Revisão Sistemática da Literatura (RSL) para o mapeamento de estudos convergentes, a identificação de artefatos já produzidos inerentes à integração mencionada e a configuração de classes de problemas. Os resultados constatam artefatos concentrados majoritariamente na fase de Operação e Manutenção da edificação e interesse crescente na fase de Construção e Comissionamento; maior recorrência de modelos e instanciações na integração de BIM e IoT, que atende a nove classes de problemas distintos e apresenta-se em pleno desenvolvimento. São discriminados as séries e os usos do modelo BIM empregados em cada contexto, bem como as tecnologias utilizadas. Ademais, são evidenciados os propósitos do BIM e da IoT na integração e os principais agentes envolvidos no processo. Apontam-se novos campos de pesquisa em um estágio post-BIM, nos quais a modelagem da informação da construção transcende para um contexto multidisciplinar, abarcando soluções específicas de Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação (TIC) e Sensoriamento que devem ampliar as relações estáticas ou dinâmicas entre os ambientes físico e virtual.

Nowadays the built heritage has been recognized as one of the main sectors that can support the economic and sustainable development of countries. In the last years, the built heritage has been subject to several levels of interventions, being now clear its need for a proper maintenance and conservation management. However, in several cases, the maintenance faces lack of building records, which makes the maintenance a harsh, long, and expensive process. erefore, there is an opportunity and need to apply new technologies, like Building Information Modelling (BIM), as supporting tool to the management of historical heritage. By so, the aim of this work was the development of a management system to be used as a supporting tool to the maintenance and conservation of the existent buildings, in historical context, facilitating to the interested parties the automated and digitized information needed to carry out the most varied tasks, with the particularity to be directly connected to the 3D-BIM model of the building. But in order to test the developed system (its applicability and functionality), it was in an early phase, applied to a pilot project with the significant heritage value. is work follows a development methodology applied to the case study and had different phases: (1) the case study was modelled in Autodesk Revit software, in whose model was inserted all the parametric information and associated metadata; (2) then, a support database of the management system was developed in Microsoft SQL Server, which will support all the information exported from the BIM model; (3) a web application was developed in C# through Visual Studio 2015, which works through and application programming interface (API) allowing the communication between the web application and the BIM model, allowing not only the interaction with the parametric information of this one, but also, a persistent access to a data management system (drawings, inspection reports, specifications, etc.) that has been created. e development of the management system and its application to the case study allows us to show its potential as a tool for the historical heritage management, contributing to its permanent and constantly updated management and cross off the fragmentation and loss of information therefore reducing the consequent investment in data collection.
