Autism awareness and attitudes towards treatment in caregivers of children aged 3–6 years in Harbin, China

Abstract: There is a large room for improvement in awareness about ASD and treatment in the Chinese communities. Insufficient knowledge about ASD and inappropriate attitudes towards mental health service use may impede the efforts of early identification and intervention. Health education and promotion are needed to improve people's knowledge about ASD and available mental health services.

“…However, the public awareness has not really emerged until recently. Wang et al found that although 93.9% of parents with children aged 3–6 years had heard about ASD, only 57.8% were somewhat aware of the associated clinical manifestations [Wang et al, ]. In Stage II of this study, we provided ASD‐related information to caregivers in the community through talks and brochures, and during these 3 years the positive rate during level 1 screening and the completion rate of face‐to‐face level 2 screening increased yearly, reflecting increasing attention to social skill development and an improved awareness of ASD.…”

“…This results in feelings of concern, anxiety, and confusion alongside the need for knowledge about the condition and how to manage their child (Makino, Wond, King, Hartma, & Penner, 2017). Early intervention is a pre-requisite for the optimal development of a CASD, therefore education of the PCG in ASD and management becomes vital (Wang, 2012). Directly linked to the awareness of ASD was the need for PCG to understand how to cater for their child's needs (Bruder, 2000).…”

“…However, in 2011 Li et al examined the prevalence of an autism-caused disability among Chinese children and explored family environmental factors associated with autism based on a national population sample. Most recently, Wang et al (2012) examined autism awareness and attitudes towards treatment in caregivers of children aged three to six years in Harbin, China while McCabe and Barnes (2012) used a qualitative case-study design to examine the experiences of a family evaluating the decision to have a second child when the first child was identified with autism, but the focus was on sibling issues and not educational issues.
