Authors' Perspective: What is the Optimum Intake of Vitamin C in Humans?

Abstract: The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of vitamin C has traditionally been based on the prevention of the vitamin C deficiency disease, scurvy. While higher intakes of vitamin C may exert additional health benefits, the limited Phase III randomized placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) of vitamin C supplementation have not found consistent benefit with respect to chronic disease prevention. To date, this has precluded upward adjustments of the current RDA. Here we argue that Phase III RCTs-designed principally to … Show more

“…In contrast, all major intervention studies have been unable to demonstrate an effect of vitamin C supplementation on cardiovascular risk (for recent studies see [32][33][34][35]). However, as pointed out by us elsewhere, none of the latter studies has unfortunately recruited and thus studied the effect of supplementation in deficient individuals which is of major importance considering the particular non-linear saturation kinetics of vitamin C [20,12,36]. Thus, properly performed animal model studies of vitamin C deficiency are indeed warranted.…”

“…Antioxidants, like some enzymes, vitamins, uric acid (UA), etc., participate in primary defense mechanisms against oxidative stress (9,10). UA is an important antioxidant in plasma that scavenges ROS and chelates metal ions (11,12).…”
