“…In terms of analysing and interpreting children’s drawings, few methods exist (Billmann-Mahecha & Drexler, 2020 ). Pictures can be generally interpreted according to three different perspectives referred to by Umberto Eco as “intentio auctoris”, “intentio operis” and “intentio lectoris”: the intention of the drawer, the work itself in comparison with other works of a particular sub-culture and the reception of the beholder (Billmann-Mahecha & Drexler, 2020 , p. 735). While we fully concede that the beholder’s interpretation is important and likely to differ from one person to the next, we were more interested in the “intentio auctoris” as far as this could be established.…”
