Augmentation of mouse natural killer activity and induction of interferon by tumor cells in vivo.

Abstract: Conventional and nude mice inoculated with syngeneic or allogenic tumor cells developed a rapid rise in serum interferon (IF) levels, peaking within 24 h. Within the same period, natural killer (NK) activity was readily boosted in the spleen. Both activities usually declined at 3 d. Cells that lacked the ability to augment NK activity also failed to induce detectable levels of IF. The boosting of IF and NK functions did not appear to be a result of contamination of the tumor lines by viruses because inoculatio… Show more

“…High levels of IFNg at week 7 PI in the 'infection + glucan' group correlated with the highest foot pad thickness at this time indicating the maximum level of infection. Djeu et al [22] also proved that antigens like viruses, bacterial products, and tumor cells are able to induce interferon (IFN) from NK cells and IFN-mediated boosting of NK activity. This may be the cause for increase of NK activity in 'infection only' group as well with time of infection because parasitic antigens can induce the release of IFNs to boost the NK cell activity.…”

“…Therefore, one cannot rule out the possibility that inoculation of certain tumor cells into older or beige mice leads to rapid production of interferon with an increase in the cytotoxic activity of NK cells in vivo to the levels observed in young, normal mice. The YAC and R L 6 1 cell lines used here are able to induce in vivo augmentation of NK activity and interferon production (Djeu et al, 1980), but this probably would not occur rapidly enough to affect the results in the 4-h i.v.…”

“…A rapid and high increase of natural killer (NK) activity has been demonstrated in mice inoculated with a variety of viruses [34], immunoadjuvants such as bacillus calmette-Guerin, (BCG) [36] or tumor cells [5].…”
