Atypical fibroxanthoma: A clinicopathological study of 89 cases

Abstract: Atypical fibroxanthoma is a controversial entity with a disputed histogenesis. It has recently been suggested that most atypical fibroxanthoma are actually variants of squamous cell carcinoma. We reviewed 100 purported cases of atypical fibroxanthoma received over 4 years to perform clinical follow up and immunohistochemical markers. In particular, we focused on the detection of any recurrence or metastasis. Ten cases were subsequently excluded on the basis of either incorrect coding, or insufficient or absent… Show more

“…Three tumors showed positive staining for CD-10 by the mesenchymal component but the significance of this is not clear as this pattern is recognized in BCC, BCC stroma, and atypical fibroxanthomas. 12,13 It is recognized that after biopsy of nodular BCC an infiltrative-like growth pattern may be induced 14 and, therefore, it is possible that trauma of some kind may be implicated in the development of the malignant mesenchymal component of these tumors. However, of the 3 cases featuring ulceration, only case 2 demonstrated malignant mesenchyme adjacent to the ulceration, which would suggest that trauma is not a major influence.…”

“…As it can present as a solitary nodule of variable color, the definitive diagnosis is made on histopathology with the aid of immunohistochemical studies. The tumor is very amenable to surgical resection and rarely recurs [1]. …”
