Atypical Antipsychotics in the Treatment of Depressive and Psychotic Symptoms in Patients with Chronic Schizophrenia: A Naturalistic Study

Abstract: Objectives. The aim of this naturalistic study was to investigate whether treatment with clozapine and other atypical antipsychotics for at least 2 years was associated with a reduction in psychotic and depressive symptoms and an improvement in chronic schizophrenia patients' awareness of their illness. “…This study included patients that were treated at a psychiatric ward and were receiving atypical antipsychotic therapy. One of the reasons for including only patients on this type of therapy was that patients treated with atypical antipsychotics had fewer side effects than those treated with typical antipsychotics, which have the advantage of reducing depressive symptoms ( 5 , 20 , 21 ).
