Attrition-Enhanced Deracemization of NaClO3: Comparison between Ultrasonic and Abrasive Grinding

Abstract: Ultrasound-enhanced grinding is a more practical alternative to glass bead-enhanced grinding for performing attrition-enhanced deracemization at large scale or in continuous flow. In this work, both ultrasound-enhanced grinding (41.2 kHz) and glass bead-enhanced grinding were applied to induce Viedma deracemization of sodium chlorate (NaClO 3) crystals in isothermal conditions. The results demonstrate that high intensity, low frequency ultrasound can achieve efficient grinding of enantiomorphous NaClO 3 crysta… Show more

“…amino acids [4][5][6][7] and pharmaceuticals [8][9][10] that crystallize as conglomerate crystals by incorporating a fast racemization reaction. The outcome of the deracemization process depends on the initial conditions 11,12 : mass or crystal size distribution (CSD) imbalance between the enantiomers 1,[13][14][15] , presence of chiral impurities 16 or additives [17][18][19] or circularly polarized light 20 . In addition, the total time to enantiopurity varies drastically for different compounds, sometimes leading to very long processing times.…”

“…The enantiomeric excess E of the solids was determined using a similar procedure as reported elsewhere. 25 A sample of the slurry was taken from the crystallizer using a disposable serological pipette. Three large drops were pipetted on a petri dish which was subsequently covered with filtration paper to prevent contamination of dust particles and to reduce the rate of solvent evaporation.…”

“…The use of ultrasound was furthermore effective in the batch deracemization approach of sodium chlorate through Viedma ripening. 25 Therefore, the use of ultrasound could be an interesting avenue of research to achieve efficient Continuous Total Spontaneous Resolution experiments in which fouling would be suppressed and the unseeded chiral form would be transformed into the seeded form through Viedma ripening. In our experiments, the effect of fouling of counter chirality crystals could be suppressed to some extent.…”

“…[21][22][23][24] The focal points of studies on Viedma ripening were often placed on mechanistic aspects 12,14,25 , on widening the scope of its application (new classes of compounds 26 , metastable solid phases 27 , etc. ), as well as exploring different operating modes (involving grinding [28][29][30] , sonication 31 , temperature cycling 32,33 or combinations thereof).…”
