Attitudes of Design Students Toward Computer Usage in Design

Abstract: The success of efforts to integrate technology with design education is largely affected by the attitudes of students toward technology. This paper presents the findings of a research on the attitudes of design students toward the use of computers in design and its correlates. Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools are the most widely used computer applications in design. An instrument was developed and applied for the first time to relate computer attitude to design field through CAD. Interior architecture undergr… Show more

“…These results support other research in which males have more positive attitudes towards the use of computers (Pektas & Erkip, 2006) and pointed out that male teachers and students consistently perceived that their ICT skills are stronger when compared with the views of female teachers and students (Lofstrom & Nevgi, 2007). Other studies also indicated that males are more comfortable with technology and had more experience using computers than females (Durndell, 1996;Matthews & Guarino, 2000).…”

“…Positive attitudes toward blogs help students adapt themselves to a new set of learning and teaching techniques that technology offers, thereby allaying their stress and discomfort (Al-Tamimi & Shuib, 2009;McIntosh, 2009). By contrast, students with negative attitudes toward blogs would be less willing to involve themselves in learning because they might view technology as a threat to their learning (Shahsavar & Tan, 2011) or a threat to their well-established and traditional techniques (Pektas & Erkip, 2006).…”

“…A previous study found out a significant gender difference in computer attitudes among interior architecture undergraduates of Bilkent students with males having more positive attitudes than females (Pektas¸& Erkip, 2006). In our study, which covered both Bilkent and TUDelft students, similarly, male students were more experienced in computer and Internet use, feeling more skilled using computers, thus, having more tendency for trial and error method of using computers.…”
