“…Several recent studies suggest that HGF suppresses both acute and chronic inflammation in a variety of organ systems and disease models (18,19,(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30)(31); however, the mechanism is still unclear. Our study demonstrates that in addition to suppressing overall inflammation, HGF modulates endothelial activation and inflammation in the remnant kidney, suppressing E-selectin expression and leukocyte adhesion.…”

“…Recently, others (19,23) and we (18,24) have provided compelling evidence to suggest that HGF also has direct anti-inflammatory effects, and this may play a role in its renoprotective action. HGF also ameliorates acute and chronic inflammation in a variety of nonrenal disease models, including inflammatory bowel disease (25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30) and airway inflammation (31). This suggests that HGF regulates key inflammatory events that are common to many diseases and organ systems.…”

“…The direct anti-inflammatory action of HGF in chronic renal disease is also likely attributable to the blockade of pro-inflammatory NF-B signaling in tubular epithelial cells [129,176,177]. HGF attenuates acute colitis by facilitating intestinal wound repair and via local anti-inflammatory action [178], including the suppression of Th1-related cytokines, as well as the number of CD4 + T cells, neutrophils, and myeloperoxidase activity in intestinal epithelium [145]. Enhanced HGF degranulation by polymorphonuclear leukocytes in patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) may also play an important role in tissue repair or organ regeneration in the injured tissue in the systemic inflammatory response [103].…”

“…Therapy for IBD mainly focuses on the regulation of inflammatory cells and their secretion of various inflammatory mediators like proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, etc. [9]. Recently, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has been recognized for the induction of inflammatory cytokines [10,11].…”
