Attenuated Bacteria as Immunotherapeutic Tools for Cancer Treatment

Abstract: The use of attenuated bacteria as cancer therapeutic tools has garnered increasing scientific interest over the past 10 years. This is largely due to the development of bacterial strains that maintain good anti-tumor efficacy, but with reduced potential to cause toxicities to the host. Because of its ability to replicate in viable as well as necrotic tissue, cancer therapy using attenuated strains of facultative anaerobic bacteria, such as Salmonella, has several advantages over standard treatment modalities, … Show more

“…Salmonella is a Gram-negative facultative anaerobic rod that affects the gastrointestinal tract. Salmonella has been demonstrated as a tumor-targeting agent and has antitumor potential [ 5 ]. Salmonella exerts a variety of biological effects in antitumor responses, such as tumor-targeting, stimulating host immunity, chemosensitivity, and anti-angiogenesis [ 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”

“…Considering the fact micro‐organisms are expected to stimulate the production of specific immune cells against specific types of cancer cells (Kaimala et al . ; Lukasiewicz and Fol ) two possible mechanisms have been proposed to explain the anticancer property of Salmonella . One, the chemotactic and motility‐based system (Ganai et al .…”

“…Analogous to the activation of TLRs, bacterial species can be inoculated in the TME, resulting in acute inflammation and M1-like TAM activation. Bacteria mediated tumor therapy has been extensively reviewed elsewhere ( 62 , 63 ).…”
