Attention, Joint Attention, and Social Cognition

Abstract: Before social cognition there is joint processing of information about the attention of self and others. This joint attention requires the integrated activation of a distributed cortical network involving the anterior and posterior attention systems. In infancy, practice with the integrated activation of this distributed attention network is a major contributor to the development of social cognition. Thus, the functional neuroanatomies of social cognition and the anterior-posterior attention systems have much … Show more

“…In the current paper, we study joint attention (JA), a basic yet fundamental mechanism of social interaction that is used by humans to coordinate and communicate intentions and information as well as guiding others' attention in a nonverbal way, especially through eye gaze (12). JA is of considerable interest both for cognitive and clinical neuroscience because it arises early in development, preceding and shaping the emergence of symbolic communication and higher-order social functions such as representational theory of mind (13,14).…”

“…This skill is, therefore, considered precursor to the development of the language. Studies point important deficits on this skill in GDD children, which must also be related to the severity of the social symptoms shown by these children 16,17 . Other works point that, even with the joint-attention severely compromised and being used as an early marker of these cases, it is not completely absent 18 .…”

“…Ainsi, l'enseignante prend part à l'activité en ajustant son action à l'aide du matériel à portée de main. Ces particularités constituent des indices formels de la manière dont l'élève a amorcé l'attention conjointe et la manière dont l'institutrice y a répondu (Mundy et Newell 2007). Il apparaît une organisation complexe des différentes actions et un agencement très spécifique dépendant des situations de classe.…”
