Much of the research on suicidal behavior in Muslim countries has been simple descriptive studies of samples of completed and attempted suicides. Despite this, and despite the possible under-reporting of suicidal behavior in countries where such behavior is illegal, suicide rates do appear to be lower in Muslims than in those of other religions, even in countries which have populations belonging to several religious groups. Rates of attempted suicide, on the other hand, do not appear to be lower in Muslims as compared to non-Muslims. Research into this topic has been quite poor, failing to take into account the ethnic background and the Islamic sect to which the suicidal subjects belonged. Reasons for the low rate of completed suicide in Muslims are reviewed, including differences in values and socio-economic status.

ÖzetTüm dünyada olduğu gibi Türkiye'de de yaşlı nüfusun oranı hızla artmaktadır. Buna paralel olarak, ileri yaşta görülen psikiyatrik hastalıklar ve intihar önem kazanmaktadır. Yaşlı intiharları çok ciddi bir halk sağlığı sorundur. Yaşlılık dönemi intihar davranışları ölme isteğinden tamamlanmış intiharlara kadar geniş bir çerçevede izlenmektedir. Yaşlı nüfusta intihar için risk faktörleri erkek cinsiyet, düşük sosyoekonomik düzey, sosyal izolasyon, umutsuzluk ve bağımlılık gibi kişilik özelliklerinin olması, psikiyatrik ve/veya fiziksel hastalıkların varlığı ve geçmişte intihar davranışlarının bulunması şeklinde tanımlanmaktadır. Tüm intiharlarda olduğu gibi yaşlı intiharlarının da en yaygın nedeni tedavi edilmemiş depresyondur. Yaşlılarda intiharın önlenmesinde başta depresif bozukluk olmak üzere psikiyatrik bozuklukların tedavi edilmesi, krize müdahale girişimleri ve ileri yaşta sosyal izolasyonun önlenmesi dikkat edilmesi gereken noktalardır. Bu gözden geçirme yazısında yaşlılık dönemi ve intihar davranışı arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. AbstractThe size of the elderly population has dramatically increased recently in Turkey similar to worldwide changes. In accordance with these demographic changes, psychiatric disorders in late life, including suicide becomes much important. Elderly suicide is a very serious public health problem. Suicidal behavior in old age exists as a spectrum ranging from death wishes to completed suicide. Risk factors for suicide in old age are male sex, lower socioeconomic status, social isolation, having personality traits like hopelessness and dependency on others etc., the presence of psychiatric and physical disorders and previous suicidal behavior. The most common cause for elderly suicide, as for all suicides, is untreated depression. The treatment of depressive disorder and other psychiatric disorders in late life, counseling in crisis situations and prevention of social isolation in elderly people are the major points for the prevention of suicide in old age. The aim of this review article is to investigate the relationship between elderly people and suicidal behavior.
