PurposeStrategic flexibility (SF) has become increasingly important for firms because of the fast changes in the external environment. In line with the practical importance of SF, an emerging research field has developed around it that has attempted to understand the nature of SF and the key relationships. The aim of this study is to unveil the semantic structure of the recent literature on SF and to suggest new promising areas for future research.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conduct a systematic literature review with a bibliographic analysis technique, which allows authors to identify the main recent streams in the literature, as well as offer reflections and suggestions for future research.FindingsThe authors uncover three main emerging areas in the research on SF, namely SF as a dynamic capability, the role of knowledge management for SF and the relationship between a firm SF and the external environment. The authors put forward three avenues for future research on SF: Avenue 1. SF, business model innovation (BMI) and other dynamic capabilities (DC), Avenue 2. Digital technologies and SF/organizational agility and Avenue 3. SF and sustainability. Articles included in the special issue entitled “A strategic perspective on flexibility, agility and adaptability in the digital era” contribute to Avenue 2, thus paving the way for filling some of the identified gaps regarding the relationship between SF and digitalization.Originality/valueTo the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first literature review on SF that uses a bibliometric approach to draw conclusions on the findings in the literature. The review contributes to the theoretical understanding of SF by illustrating and explicating core topics that have persisted over time, as well as by presenting three main avenues for further developing authors’ knowledge around SF.

An organization is the formation of human relations work behavior efficiently and effectively to obtain personal satisfaction in carrying out their duties and providing certain environmental conditions to achieve goals. This study aimed to determine the effect of system quality, adoption of business intelligence, and flexibility of IT infrastructure mediated by organizational agility mediated by competitive performance on online fashion retailers so that it can be used as a reference in the field of science. Quantitative techniques were used in this study. The analysis of this study is a structural approach to the Equation Model (SEM) with the help of smart PLS. The results of this study are to indicate that the adoption of business intelligence is not able to affect organizational agility, system quality affects organizational agility, IT infrastructure flexibility affects organizational agility, competitive performance affects organizational agility, system quality affects competitive performance, adoption of business intelligence affects competitive performance, IT infrastructure flexibility affects competitive performance. Competitive performance is able to mediate the effect of system quality on organizational agility and IT infrastructure flexibility on organizational agility. Competitive performance is not able to mediate the adoption of business intelligence on organizational agility. This research contributes literature for further research conducted by other researchers.

Purpose Academic dialogue related to ‘organizational performance’ in strategic management has primarily centred around the industrial organization theory (IO) and resource-based view (RBV). Both perspectives, though conceptually dialectic, have served as primary competing theories governing research studies in the domain of strategic management. However, the confluence of these theoretical perspectives has not been adequately explored to advance a shared view of competitive advantage. This study aims to explore the likelihood of embedded commonalities between RBV and IO. Design/methodology/approach A bibliometric analysis was conducted to visualize the intellectual map of studies and knowledge development encompassing these theories. This was followed by a comprehensive literature review to understand how the business environment (BE) and organizational capabilities have contributed towards attaining competitive advantage. Findings This study established that connecting the intellectual boundaries of these theoretical perspectives would facilitate better comprehension of the processes and outcomes in organizations. Integrating the knowledge emerging out of this methodological blend, a convergence framework connecting the intellectual boundaries of both theories was presented. Practical implications The framework that emerged from this study would help in better understanding of organizational behaviour from a dual theoretical lens. It would also motivate future studies to consider RBV and IO as complementary theories rather than the current narrative of competing theories. Social implications This study added to the efforts to achieve equilibrium between the BE and internal capabilities of organizations so as to maximize positive social externalities. Originality/value This study contributed to the limited attempts to leverage shared knowledge from a dual perspective using a comprehensive literature review in sequential combination with bibliometric analysis.
