ObjectiveGuided by Self‐Determination Theory, the study explored how maternal and paternal prenatal childbearing motivations relate to toddlers' adjustment via parental competence and parenting style.BackgroundAlthough considerable research shows consistent effects of parenting styles on child adjustment, why some parents adopt any specific style is unclear. To explore this, two broad types of childbearing motivations (autonomous and controlled) were conceptualized as early markers of parental competence, specific parenting styles, and subsequent child adjustment.MethodOne‐hundred and fifty‐five married, heterosexual, Israeli couples (N = 310) participated in a 2‐year longitudinal study from pregnancy through 20 months postpartum. Childbearing motivations were measured during pregnancy (T1), parental competence at 4 months postpartum (T2), and parenting styles and child behavior problems at 20 months postpartum (T3).ResultsA dyadic longitudinal path model revealed that childbearing motivations of both parents were positively associated with an adaptive, authoritative parenting style via parental competence. Moderate indirect effects of controlled childbearing motivations on toddlers' behavior problems were evident through the less adaptive—authoritarian and permissive—parenting styles.ConclusionThis study underscores the importance of childbearing motivations as early indicators of future parenting styles and child adjustment and sheds light on parenting as a complex dyadic process.

Background Infant mental health represents a significant public health issue. The transition to parenthood provides optimal opportunities for supporting parenting competence. Especially parental mentalization, i.e. the caregiver’s ability to notice and interpret the child’s behavior in terms of mental states, is important in infancy where the caregiver-infant communication is based solely on the infant’s behavioral cues. Methods This study evaluates the efficacy of the intervention Understanding Your Baby (UYB) compared to Care As Usual (CAU) in 10 Danish municipalities. UYB aims at promoting parental competence in new parents by supporting them in noticing their infants’ behavioral cues and interpreting them in terms of mental states. Participants will be approximately 1,130 singletons and their parents. Inclusion criteria are first-time parents, minimum 18 years old, living in one of the 10 municipalities, and registered in the Danish Civil Registration Register (CPR). Around 230 health visitors deliver the UYB as part of their routine observation of infant social withdrawal in the Danish home visiting program. During an interaction between the health visitor and the infant, the health visitor articulates specific infant behaviors and helps the caregivers interpret these behaviors to mental states. The study is a controlled parallel group study with data obtained at four time points in two phases: First in the control group receiving the publicly available postnatal care (CAU), secondly in the intervention group after UYB implementation into the existing postnatal services. The primary outcome is maternal competence. Secondary measures include paternal competence, parental stress, parental mentalizing, and infant socioemotional development. Analysis will employ survey data and data from the health visitors’ register. Discussion Results will provide evidence regarding the efficacy of UYB in promoting parenting competences. If proved effective, the study will represent a notable advance to initiating the UYB intervention as part of a better infant mental health strategy in Denmark. Conversely, if UYB is inferior to CAU, this is also important knowledge in regard to promoting parenting competence and infant mental health in a general population. Childbirth is one of the most important experiences in the life of mothers, which can bring tensions and worries due to physical and psychological changes. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the amount of support and control during childbirth and attachment after birth in mothers who were referred to comprehensive health centers in Bijar County, in 2019. In this descriptive-analytical study, the studied population consisted of all the mothers who were referred to the comprehensive health centers of Bijar, who had passed 28 days after giving birth. The participants in the study were available to choose and completed the questionnaires for support and control during childbirth and attachment after birth. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS statistical software version 22 and multiple regression statistical tests, and a significance level of p<0.05 was considered. The results of the study showed that the level of support and control during childbirth was 83.32±17.038 and the level of attachment after birth was 47.70±4.688. Also, the results of the study showed that none of the investigated demographic variables were related to support and control during childbirth. The type of delivery (vaginal delivery with episiotomy r=-2.226, p=0.012) and the baby's gender (r=9.927, p=0.047) were related to support and control during delivery. Also, the results showed that among the demographic variables examined with attachment after birth, the variable of income (equal to monthly expenses r=6.307, p=0.01) had a positive and significant relationship with attachment after birth. The findings showed that support and control are at a moderate level and attachment after birth is at an average level, so it seems that with the necessary training on the importance of mother and child attachment to medical personnel, an effective step can be taken to improve these two factors and their consequences.
